Evolution of spatial variability and physico-chemical properties of snow on coastal tundra of Hornsund fjord during the Spring, RIS-ID 10450

Awarded: NOK 52,759

Project assumes usage of Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR), snow dyeing, collecting snow samples for chemical analysis and describing the internal structure of snowpack during a series of repetitive snowpits. The main aim is to study spatial distribution of snow cover and its ongoing physical and chemical properties change during ablation season on the unglaciated shores of the Hornsund fjord. Project will be a valuable enhancement of PhD thesis of the applicant, concentrated on mutual relations between snow cover, land cover and topography in coastal tundra. Gathered data will fulfill the knowledge about snow and will be the reference material in other projects conducted on Svalbard (e.g. RIS-ID 10218, RIS-ID 10269).
