NAGLAMB: Ny-Ålesund GLAcier Mass Balance workshop

Awarded: NOK 0.17 mill.

This proposal seeks support for a workshop to enhance international and interdisciplinary cooperation on the mass balance measurement programs currently running in the Ny-Ålesund area. Research challenges and opportunities will be identified, with focus on data gaps and sources of uncertainty, identifying new techniques and instrumentation, and optimizing program methodology. We will discuss unresolved problems in the field measurement programs, focusing on increased cooperation within research, and coordination of activities to reduce costs and environmental impact. We seek better communication between the field and modeling communities, by inviting modelers working on Svalbard-wide mass balance. To conserve the momentum gained through this workshop we will work toward establishing a platform for more regular exchange of data and expertise. By drawing upon the collective expertise of a diverse group of experienced researchers, the workshop aims to forge more long-lasting contacts to enhance the interdisciplinary collaboration portfolio of the group, encourage transfer of knowledge and expertise within Norway and internationally, and reduce the environmental impact of research in Svalbard by improving and increasing collaboration between groups.
