SET9: Special Project om BioCCS under IEA Bioenergy

Alternative title: Special Project BIOCCS under the IEA Bioenergy

Awarded: NOK 0.14 mill.

Most of the Greenhouse gas emission scenarios compatible with a global temperature increase limited to two degrees Celsius by the end of the century, indicate that show that Carbon negative technologies must be implemented. Since biomass absorbs CO2 from the atmosphere, capturing the CO2 emitted from bioenergy and storing it permanently in geological formations, is a most promising way to remove CO2 from the atmosphere; this is called Bioenergy with CO2 Capture and Storage (Bio-CCS). The technology is at the cross road of two large scientific fields, bioenergy and CCS, which are strongly represented at the International Energy Agency (IEA). In 2015, the Executive Committee of the IEA Bioenergy approved a proposal for a Special Project on BioCCS, submitted by the Finnish research organization VTT. The Special Project, in which SINTEF Energy Research represents Norway, consists in assessing the potential and possibilities for BioCCS among the participant states. It is planned organized in 4 workshops with themes: (i) Applied and best practice technologies and financial aspects of Bio-CCS; (ii) Sustainability and GHG impact of Bio-CCS; (iii) Market driven future potential of Bio-CCS; (iv) Political and regulatory issues related to Bio-CCS. The applied project will cover participation in the first year (2 Workshop). Coordination and information dissemination among Norwegian research groups and industry shall be handled through the channels SINTEF Energy Research is already active in, such as FME CenBio and BIGCCS, other relevant IEA Tasks. Support for participation to the Special Project BioCCS will secure positioning of Norway on the "Bio-CCS map". A Bio-CCS Scoping Study paper is among the expected deliveries.

Special Project BioCCS er planlagt organisert i 4 arbeidsmøter med temaer: (i) Applied and best practise technologies and financial aspects of Bio-CC(U)S; (ii) Sustainability and GHG impact of Bio-CC(U)S; (iii) Market driven future potential of Bio-CC(U)S; (iv) Political and regulatory issues related to Bio-CC(U)S.
