Gas mixtures are used widely in research and industry, not only mixtures where the ratios of input gases are known beforehand, but also mixtures that need to change dynamically during experiments and processes. Existing mixers have limited dynamic mixing range and complicated constructs. This project utilizes a new principle which extends both the range of how far it is possible to dilute, as well as how accurate this dilution can be. Additionally the new design will lower the parts and fabrication costs. The result will be a compact unit with a sophisticated and easy-to-use interface.

The mixer was developed as expected.

Gas mixtures are used widely in research and industry, not only static mixtures but also mixtures that need to change dynamically. Existing mixers have limited dynamic mixing range and complicated constructs. This project will utilize new principle to improve the dynamic mixing range for gas mixers while lowering the parts cost of building the mixer. Main challenge is to develop an accurate model of the mixing of gas species as function of flow rates, the physical properties of mixing chambers, diffusion, turbulence, convection and other contributing factors. With the model a computational approach can be used to solve for required mixer behavior pattern to produce desired gas mixture.
