BIA-Brukerstyrt innovasjonsarena

Bygdin is a 3-year network partly financed by the Research Council of Norway and managed by SINTEF Community. The network brings together research organizations (SINTEF, NTNU and BI) and businesses from the entire value chain in construction projects (BA projects): government agencies, builders and owners, architects and consultants, contractors and skilled workers, manufacturers and suppliers. The network focused first on industrialized construction processes, and then on the digital transformation of the construction industry. A total of 5 workshops have been conducted between research and industry partners. The main motivation behind workshops was to provide industrial partners an arena for developing collaboration with research partners. Bygdin workshops have resulted in the writing and submission of two proposals to the Norwegian Research Council: one KPN proposal in 2018 and one SFI proposal to be submitted in 2019. Topics discussed during workshops included: 3D printing for the construction industry, waste-free building sites, emission-free building processes, Building Information Modelling (BIM), building-related data. Some workshops were jointly organized with other networks, e.g. BIM Verdinettverk. Bygdin network has also organized 2 major conferences under the generic title Bygg 4.0, in reference to the Industry 4.0 concept. The two conferences, organized in 2018 and 2019, gathered more than 200 participants from the two sectors of construction and ICT around the main topic of the digital transformation of the construction industry. The last edition set a focus on innovative digital business models for the construction industry. In both editions, keynotes speakers from outside Norway were invited to share their knowledge and experience; among them Philippe Poullain, a French professor behind the first 3D printed house to be certified, and Annie Cosgrove, researcher at WeWork (USA). Most of the presentations and videos from the Bygg 4.0 conferences are available at www.bygg40.com. The main motivation for Bygg 4.0 conferences is to trigger opportunities for new collaboration between stakeholders in the architecture, engineering, construction, and ICT sector. It is highly likely that these conferences will be continued in the next year, even once the Bygdin network will be finished. Bygdin has also produced a substantial number of publications, among them the report "Industrialized Construction Processes: Status and Trends ", available for free at SINTEF Academic Publishers. Other publications include scientific papers and conference papers, and a considerable number of popular science articles published in Norwegian specialized press and general newspapers.

Bygg 4.0 conferences in 2018 and 2019 were two successful events that gathered more than 200 participants from 3 sectors: construction, ICT and finance. This type of event was deemed as the most efficient tool for triggering new collaborations inside and outside Norway, internally but also across several sectors. The Bygg 4.0 conference series will be continued even after Bygdin network will cease its activities, and this alone constitutes a substantial result from the Bygdin network.

Nettverkets arbeidsområde er "industrialiserte byggeprosesser". Det samler FoU-miljøer og bedrifter/virksomheter fra hele verdikjeden i bygg- og anleggsprosjekter. Nettverket skal stimulere til samarbeid, nytenking, erfaringsutveksling og til prosjektsøknader på områder som er forankret i bedriftene. Sentrale aktiviteter i nettverket er gjennomføring av utvalgte grunnlags-og mulighetsstudier, workshops og frokostmøter, og formidlingsaktiviteter. Teknologitrendene, det grønne skiftet, behovet for økt produktivitet og kvalitet, samt et tøffere og mer globalt marked skaper behov for ny kunnskap og kompetanse i alle ledd i verdikjeden: hos myndigheter og byggherre, i prosjekteringsteamet, i fabrikkhallen og på byggeplassen. For å rigge næringen til skrittet inn i 4. generasjons industrialisering trenger vi nytenking rundt verdikjeder, planlegging, fremdrift, forretningsmodeller, arbeidsprosesser og kompetanseutvikling. Dette krever et samarbeid mellom alle aktørene i verdikjeden, med byggherrene og bestillerne i front som viktige premissgivere og krav-stillere. En industrialisert byggeprosess påvirker både måten vi planlegger og bygger på, og på uttrykket til sluttproduktet. Lykkes BA-næringen med omstillingen fra tradisjonelle til industrialiserte byggeprosesser med høy teknologiutnyttelse, forventes dette å ha stor effekt på næringens produktivitet og på bedriftenes konkurransekraft og verdiskaping. Det er et betydelig potensiale for økt effektivitet og reduserte kostnader. I en australsk satsing på prefabrikasjon opereres det med måltall som 90% reduksjon i produksjonstid og 50% kostnads-reduksjon. Et viktig perspektiv for nettverkets arbeid er at en industrialisering av byggeprosessene skal bidra til kunde- og stedstilpasning, fleksibilitet og arkitektonisk kvalitet. Initiativene skal vise at det ikke er en motsetning mellom standardisering og skreddersøm.
