Sustainable Development of the Arctic Indigenous Peoples and Asian Observers Su Ping, Assistant Professor of Polar And Oceanic Studies, Tongji University The research project aims to explore the relation between Arctic indigenous people and Asian Observers on the sustainable development. This is not only an important issue for the Arctic Council Permanent Participants and the Arctic Member States, but also the Asian Observer States. Asian Observer States are now seeking greater knowledge of the role of Arctic indigenous peoples in protecting environment while promoting economic development, ensuring local benefits and comprehensively sustainable development. Asian Observer States are hoping to develop a greater understanding of possibilities for Asian states to collaborate with Arctic indigenous peoples in striving for comprehensively sustainable development in the Arctic in a globalized world, where the Arctic and Asia affect each other. There is already cooperation among AIP and Asian observers, 1) the cooperation in IASC, IASC, as the credited observer of the Arctic Council, involved the member institute from both the Arctic states and Asian observers, provide scientific support for the Arctic council including permanent participants. At the same time, International Conference of Arctic Research Planning (ICARP) organized by IASC is also a framework to promote Arctic states and non-Arctic states to develop constructive relationship on knowledge producing and using. 2)the cooperation among Indigenous People Secretariat (IPS) and Asian observers, such as the project Cold Map Story, which is a example supported by an Asian observer to help the indigenous people to show their life with pictures on line.
