Marine Renewable Energy (MRE) sources can make a significant contribution to Europe?s energy mix and carbon free society. They represent an additional green energy source and can therefore play an important role in strengthening the EU?s security of supply. Europe is ideally placed to grow its MRE sector, with a strong business and technological fabric operating in the energy and marine industries, alongside an excellent marine resource in terms of recoverable energy1. Effective exploitation of this opportunity will deliver the substantial job creation identified in the study Ocean Research in Horizon 20202. This project especially targets SMEs transitioning from key marine and non-marine value chains into the emerging MRE marketplace. The global goal is to accelerate MRE market development, within Europe and internationally, through systemic cost reduction along the entire MRE value chain. Eight European Cluster organizations involved in seven different value chains in Europe (Renewable Energy, Fabrication & Maritime Services, Maritime Devices & Engineering, Oil & Gas, Marine Environment, Resources & Risk, Power Electronics and ICTs/Big Data), will collaborate in the NewMARE project. These seven existing value chains can provide expertise and innovation capacity in critical areas of MRE cost-reduction and competitiveness. In aggregate, this integration of capability will dramatically improve the competitiveness of the entire emerging MRE value chain. This could only be achieved by defining a new MRE value chain that mobilises new innovation capacity and incentivises engagement of well-prepared and well-connected SMEs.
