Resonant Inductive Coupling Universal energy Source for instrumentation

Awarded: NOK 0.15 mill.

A realistic implementation of the Smart Grids concept across national borders that also will contribute to modernize and ensure safe operation of the European electricity grid will require dependable monitoring and control. Powering the monitoring units directly from high voltage lines through high-voltage transformers is impractical and dangerous, and changing batteries in hundred thousands of units on pylons and in tunnels is costly and not practical to accomplish. New electronics and ICT solutions today require only thousandth parts of energy compared to just some years ago. Calculated over an expected 40-year life time, the average maintenance cost for a typical high-voltage power grid is between 3% - 4% of the initial cost of construction, plus the total operational and running costs over that same lifetime period. Overall maintenance cost in EU for the transmission and distribution network power grid has been estimated to annually Euro 2.5Bn and we believe that the global electrical network maintenance costs of 5 times the EU estimate; Euro 12.5Bn worldwide. Introduction of a ruggedized unit that safely can harvest energy from AC power lines to power monitoring and communication sensors will therefore have a large market.
