Identification of emerging thyroid-disrupting compounds, and their associated effects in glaucous gull. RIS-ID: 10654

Awarded: NOK 46,999

Endocrine disrupting compounds can cause harmful effects by interfering with hormone system e.g. the synthesis, secretion, transport, cellular uptake or signaling pathway of the hormones. The aim of the project is to investigated the ecological relevance of thyroid disrupting chemicals in glaucous gull by identifying compounds that could bind to the thyroid hormone receptor and the serum thyroid transport proteins and investigate the potential effects of these mechanisms at the individual and population level. Samples from the field is necessary in order to investigated the impact of thyroid disrupting compounds. Analysis of hormone levels, contaminants levels, oxidative stress, protein levels, enzyme activity and gene expression will be performed and will along with biometric data and population variables be used to answer the aim of this study.
