Renewable energy on the high seas – science-informed and indigenous knowledge-based recommendations for regulatory and governance challenges

The high seas are those marine areas under no State's jurisdiction. So far, all marine renewable energy (RE) activity is being conducted under State's jurisdiction. However, recent advances in technology are raising the prospect of carrying out RE activity on the high seas. Currently, only seabed mining activities in the Area have been regulated. The Area is the seabed and ocean floor beyond the limits of State's jurisdiction. From the legal viewpoint, the main gap is a lack of an international regulatory framework, informed by participatory mechanisms and supported by scientific evidence, for RE activities on the high seas, especially regarding their environmental and social impacts. 
The primary project objective (O) is to provide the scientific community and policymakers with science-informed and indigenous knowledge-based recommendations in support of the development of  RE regulation on the high seas. 
Two specific Os are set to complement the primary O, namely:
O1 To advance the use of systematic consultation processes that facilitates research at the crossroads of marine sciences and law. 
O2 To advance critical knowledge and understanding of environmental pressing issues comparable to the regulation of RE on the high seas, such as deep-sea mining in the Area.
A multistep innovative methodology will be adopted, by integrating marine scientific knowledge, consultative processes, and advanced critical research in the subject matter. A case study (interdisciplinary and participatory) involving marine scientists, indigenous and coastal communities and policy makers will be conducted onboard the Research Vessel KronPrins Haakon at the beginning of the project. The case study outcomes will be analysed through critical legal analysis to build a knowledge base for policy recommendations. 
The project will advance the PI’s career in an international research environment, allowing her to generate independent, high-quality, and reproducible results.




Optimization of Free Space Optical Communication Link based Drones for Search and Rescue Operations in the Arctic Region

The Arctic region is witnessing more frequent shipping accidents than ever which require accurate search and rescue operations. The existing communication systems use drones with radio frequency (RF) technology, which has limited bandwidth and cannot offer 4G/5G connectivity due to harsh weather constraints. It further limits the capacity of drones and affects the resolution of images and videos. The current research proposes to design free space optical communication (FSOC) link-based drones that can enhance connectivity between multiple drones and rescue ships as well as the capacity of drones to produce high resolution images and videos. The proposed FSOC-based drones can provide highspeed connectivity than the existing RF technology. The research will collect atmospheric turbulences data from the Arctic region and use it for designing the FSOC link. Furthermore, to enhance the capacity of FSOC-based drones, the research will design advanced multiplexing schemes (Mode Division Multiplexing and Orthogonal Code Division Multiple Access) and to ensure link stability, omnidirectional receiver will be designed. The research will further evaluate the performance of proposed FSOC link under the impact of various atmospheric turbulences. The expected outcomes of this research will lead to the optimisation of FSOC-based drones in expanding search areas and improving communication systems for SAR operations in the Arctic region.

Currently, 28.2% of the total EU-28 greenhouse gas emissions come from the power sector, a large contributor to greenhouse gas emissions. Consequently, the emphasis of the research in power generation has swung towards assessing highly efficient and greener power cycles. In this reference, the novel supercritical carbon dioxide Brayton cycle (sCO2-BC) is an ideal choice that outstrips other formally well-known power cycles (Brayton & Rankine cycles). In sCO2-BC, the role of the pre-cooler is critical. It serves as a sink to the power cycle and regulates the conditions at the compressor's inlet. The compressor's inlet temperature is intended to be maintained close to the critical temperature of carbon dioxide (CO2) to achieve greater cycle efficiencies. However, exceptionally higher values of the specific heat capacity of CO2 near its critical point (up to 40 times higher than water) require exceedingly high water flow rates on the cold side to achieve the desired exit temperatures of CO2. Consequently, the pre-cooler's pumping power requirements become high enough to deteriorate the cycle's performance. This problem can only be mitigated by exploring new channel geometries with enhanced thermohydraulic characteristics. Therefore, the proposed study plan to characterize the complex thermohydraulic characteristics in the pseudocritical region of CO2 using a multifaceted technique that includes, experimental, numerical, and machine learning techniques. The proposed work will provide a step forward to the success of sCO2-BC technologies that, in turn, will facilitate its integration with the green energy resources (generation-IV nuclear reactors and solar concentrated plants), helping to meet the EU's 2030 climate and energy framework goals of achieving at least 32% share for renewable energy.

Evaluation of thermohydraulic characteristic of printed circuit heat exchangers in pseudocritical region for supercritical CO2 cycle

Det bygde miljøet krever en umiddelbar innføring av ombruksstrategier som adresserer ressursavfalls- og utslippsproblemet. Resirkulering og ombruk begrenses av mangel på prosedyrer for kvalitetsvurdering som reduserer risikoen for industrien. 
Derfor er det nødvendig med en resertifiseringsprosess basert på pålitelig, replikerbar og gjennomførbar tilstandsvurderingsmetodikk for gjenvunnet/innebygd tømmer.
Hovedmålene for prosjektet:
Identifisere settet med ikke-destruktive tester (NDT) som er best egnet for omfattende og effektiv tilstandsvurdering (dvs. tetthet, stivhet, styrke, brannmotstand, defekter, fuktighetsinnhold, fiberretning) i tre som er gjennomførbart for in-situ, samt laboratoriemiljø.
Utvikle prosedyrer for etterbehandling av data fra NDT-er for den høyeste informasjonsverdien og kombinert risiko-/pålitelighet-kvantifisering med en omfattende metadatamal for datalagre.
Testing av den utviklede metodikken på en reell case-studie for adaptiv gjenbruk av en fem-etasjes kontorbygning i tømmer. 
Etablering av sirkularitetskvantifisering basert på det reelle potensialet og LCA-prosedyre for langlivede tømmerprodukter, inkludert risikokvantifisering over flere ombruk og resirkulering/gjenvinning – tømmerkaskade.
Utvikle dokumentasjon og retningslinjer for resertifisering for gjenvunnet tømmer som grunnlag for europeisk standardisering.
Ombruk av eksisterende bygninger eller deres komponenter har i dag det høyeste potensialet for å redusere karbonutslipp fra byggeindustrien og begrense etterspørselen etter nye råvarer. Ti-ReX har som mål å forbedre byggebransjens bærekraft ved å muliggjøre utstrakt gjenbruk av bærende trekonstruksjoner - enten i den opprinnelige bygningen med samme eller endret konfigurasjon, eller i andre bygninger. Treelementer i bygninger kan ha flere formål; for eksempel bærende, stabilisering, brannspredningsforebygging, varme- og lydisolering og estetikk.

TiREX project answers to the Joint Call Forest Value 2, topic on 'Sustainable timber building systems'. Focus is put on enabling reuse and life extension of the timber structures by developing knowledge and tools for condition assessment of reclaimed timber. The main barrier to circular economy of timber industry addressed in TiReX is the organisation of timber strength grading and quality assessment of solid timber around the material raw production in the saw mill industry. TiREX is divided into 5 core work packages focused on laboratory testing (Spain), data processing (WUT), pilot project of adaptive reuse of timber (Norway), environmental analysis (Finland), and dissemination and communication (Latvia). Testing reclaimed timber from north, south and east Europe with non-destructive and destructive methods is the core TiREX activity and includes mechanical and thermal performance. Methods of data processing for replicability, accuracy, uniformity, future standardization, practicality and reliability of results in real settings will be developed and tested. Real timber building adaptive reuse project in Norway will provide field laboratory for verifying theoretical ideas and frameworks. Holistic environmental assessment methodology for circular wood industry will be theoretically developed and showcased on the pilot building. TiREX contributes to the call objectives of increased carbon sequestration, optimal carbon storage, circular use of wood, integration of cascading, as well as addresses circular and recycling wood principles, organisational structure and policies and regulation. TiReX project is focused on generating knowledge and procedures that offer huge potential for emission and waste reduction and thus require fast popularization and adoption within construction industry to be impactful. TiREX has strong transnational cooperation to prepare data sets that span wide range of parameters representative for Europe via sharing knowledge and laboratories.

ForestValue2 JC2023 - Smart condition assessment of Reclaimed Timber for eXtended service life of long-lived wood products

GeoPON-prosjektet tar sikte på å utvikle en 100 % sirkulær pongtong, fri for EPS, ved bruk av en skreddersydd geopolymer betong, og å dokumentere virkningene på ytelse og bærekraft. I tillegg, og for å redusere den totale tettheten til pongtongen, vil prosjektet også se på å erstatte de naturlige tilslagene i betongskallet med et sirkulært lett tilslag med lavt eller nøytralt karbonavtrykk, laget av avgang fra gruveindustrien og resirkulerte materialer fra industrien, . Som sådan vil innovasjonen føre til design av et nytt produkt, 100 % sirkulært og med lavere karbonavtrykk enn tradisjonell betong. For å passe til pongtong-spesifikasjonene, må produksjonsprosessen av det geopolymer baserte bindemiddelet og tilslagene optimaliseres og tilpasses.: Det  geopolymer baserte bindemiddelet er et semikrystallinsk amorft materiale, som dannes gjennom polymerisasjonsreaksjonen mellom en aluminosilikat kilde og en alkalisk reagens. Det er et sementfritt bindemiddel, med ultralavt karbonavtrykk, som også tillater CO2-binding. Tilslagene som produseres i prosjektet er satt sammen av et bindemiddel, et tilslagsmateriale samt ulike ytelsesbaserte tilsetningsstoffer, granulert og sintret ved høy temperatur, en prosess som gjør det mulig å skreddersy tilslagsegenskapene til brukerens behov, og for å kunne utnytte den produserte geopolymer baserte betongen som råmateriale ved produksjon av tilsvarende tilslag på slutten av levetiden. For å muliggjøre integrering av den sirkulære geopolymerbetongen som er utviklet i prosjektet til pongtongen, vil det etableres en helhetlig optimaliseringstilnærming i prosjektet, for å definere den beste utformingen av flytende strukturer basert på vurderingene av sirkulære betonger og kravet til de strukturelle ytelsene. Tilnærmingen vil inkludere design, bruk av fluidstrukturinteraksjonsmodellering, produksjon av pongtongen, produksjon av geopolymer og aggregater, og vurdering av miljømessige/økonomiske hensyn.

The main objective of the project is the development of 100% circular pontoon free of EPS using tailored geopolymer concretes and demonstrate the impacts on performance and sustainability. In addition, and for decreasing the overall density of the pontoon, the project will also look at substituting the natural aggregates in concrete shell by high performance recycled particles obtained from industrial wastes. As such, the innovation will lead to the design of a new product, 100% circular, manufactured and commercialised by Helmar. The production process of the foamed geopolymer concrete and the aggregates must also be optimised and tailored to fit for the pontoon specifications, leading to a new production process for Rockpore, and new waste recycle chain for Rana Gruber.
Helmar anticipates that the use of EPS might be prohibited in the future due to new regulations and is looking for alternatives.  The Rockpore solution appears very appealing as a substitute for EPS: The Rockpore concept is a type of low-density geopolymer-concrete, 100% circular, using recycled Light Weight Aggregates and cement free binders. The properties of the TBG can be modified to fit end user needs, which enables market penetration in markets outside the construction sector. The present project aims at utilising and adapting the Rockpore TBG together with a unique cement free, ultra-low carbon footprint binder as a substitute to traditional EPS block in the pontoons. In addition, a new aggregate type will be developed, as a substitute to the natural aggregates used in the shell concrete. To enable the integration of the circular geopolymer concrete developed in the project to the pontoon, a holistic optimization method will be established to define the best design of floating structure based on the assessments of circular concretes and the requirement on the structural performances, and will include design, manufacturing and assessment of environmental/economic considerations.

Development of a fully circular pontoon design by substituting EPS with a foamed carbon sequestrated geopolymer-concrete

Prosjektet inngår i arbeidet med å nå Elkems overordnede målsetning om å redusere bruken av fossile reduksjonsmidler (kull og koks) i smelteovner for silisium- og ferrosilisium-produksjon. Elkem har utviklet biokarbon med helt spesifikke egenskaper som inkluderer høy mekanisk styrke både ved normale og høye temperaturer i tillegg til en balanse mellom høy porøsitet og høy reaktivitet.

Elkem’s pilotanlegg produserer nå materiale for fullskala utprøving i industrielle smelteovner. Det er viktig å forstå hvilken effekt disse nye råvarene har på kvaliteten av silisium, ferrosilisium og Microsilica® som produseres. Forskningen på dette området er til dels vanskelig å utføre på lab siden prosessene som foregår er skala-avhengige. Derfor vil prosjektet ta utgangspunkt i fullskalaforsøkene. Prøver tatt før, under og etter forsøk med nye biokarbon vil sammenlignes med prediksjoner fra modelleringsverktøy.

En viktig FoU-oppgave er å optimalisere råstoffegenskaper som partikkelstørrelsesfordeling, blandingsforhold og identifisere forbedrede prosessbetingelser for behandling av mellomprodukter for etterfølgende produksjonstrinn for høyverdige biokarbonprodukter.

Biproduktstrømmer har potensiale for kjemisk eller energetisk utnyttelse. Imidlertid er en presis karakterisering nødvendig for å kunne utnytte dette potensialet. Prosjektet fortsetter derfor arbeidet med avanserte analyser av komplekse bistrømmer.

Introduksjonen av større andeler biokarbon som reduksjonsmiddel øker mengden uønskede elementer i smelteovnene. Elementfordelingsfaktorer skal undersøkes, og nye modellverktøy blir utviklet for å predikere kvalitativ og kvantitativ fordeling av urenheter.

Prosjektet søker å få en mer grunnleggende forståelse av dannelsen av Microsilica® under røkhetten i ovnen. I tillegg til detaljerte analyser av Microsilica® for å lokalisere elementene i sluttproduktet vil det også gjøres avansert modellering av dannelse av Microsilica® i smelteovnen.

The overall objective of the BioSiMS project is to ensure that silicon, ferrosilicon and microsilica quality can be kept within or close to current specifications when reducing CO2-emissions from the process.

Elkem's strategy is to be the world's most sustainable producer of ferrosilicon and silicon alloys and through this contribute to the zero-emission society. Changing the reduction material from fossil carbon (coal and coke) to biogenic reduction materials in the production process is a key part of the strategy. Elkem has establised the first pilot plant for production of newly developed biocarbon agglomerate developed through a series of earlier research projects. BioSiMS seeks to further support this development going into full scale and at the same time investigate the effect on chemistry and quality of Elkem's products silicon, ferrosilicon and microsilica.

The overall goal is that the project will fast track the transition from pilot to full-scale production by omitting the majority of bottlenecks and risks and ensure that Elkem can maintain its position as a pioneer in renewable reductants in the metallurgical segment.

The ultimate goal of the Project is to support Elkems work in the transition from fossile based carbothermic reduction to a mainly biobased production process, and at the same time ensure that product quality remains at today's high level through fundamental experimental R&D work and advanced modelling.

BioCarbon for Silicon and MicroSilica Quality

Maritim- og offshoreindustrien har etterlyst en mer strukturert metode, som utnytter dagens teknologiske potensial, for å registrere og få tilgang til informasjon om fartøyets skrogtilstand. Utviklingen av en digital tvilling for vurdering av fartøyets skrogtilstand er et svar på dette som har flere fordeler.

Tidligere forskningsresultater har vist at droner tillater trygge,  automatiserte og fleksible fjerninspeksjoner. For å gi droneinspeksjoner en ekstra fordel, bør teknologi for å utføre droneinspeksjon mens fartøyet seiler, og muligheten til å automatisk gjøre tykkelsesmålinger, utvikles. Registrering av inspeksjonsdata fra droner til en digital tvilling er et naturlig neste steg. Gitt tilstrekkelig kvalitet på drone-innsamlede data, i tillegg til effektiv registrering av menneskelig innsamlede data, kan både menneskelige og dronebaserte inspeksjoner gi data til en digital tvilling og komplementere hverandre. Dette kan muliggjøre en mer effektiv overvåkning av skrogtilstand og redusere antall ganger mennesker utsettes for farene ved inspeksjon av trange/innestengte rom.

Ved å samle inn relevante skrogdata er det et potensial for å utnytte historisk informasjon fra en mengde fartøyer til å lage en statistisk modell for å forutsi skrogtilstanden. Dette kan tillate estimering av skrogets tilstand basert på operasjonelle forhold et fartøy har vært utsatt for. I kombinasjon med konstruksjonsmodeller kan dette også brukes til å automatisk lage skroginspeksjonsplaner som prioriterer områder med økt risiko for å ha feil.

Prosjektet ledes av DNV, et ledende klassifikasjonsselskap, i samarbeid med rederiene Altera Infrastructure og Klaveness, som er henholdsvis oljetanker- og lasteskipsoperatører i dette prosjektet, ScoutDI, en inspeksjonsdrone-leverandør, og NTNU gjennom Autonomous Robots Lab ved avdeling for kybernetikk.

The project will develop the concept of a digital twin of the hull condition for assessing the structural integrity and compliance of the physical hull. The digital twin is kept up to date with the physical hull over its lifetime by frequently collecting large amounts of data, in non-intrusive ways that do not interrupt business operations. This enables continuous monitoring and compliance assessment. Autonomous drones collect the data instead of humans to improve personnel safety. Automated damage detection and coating breakdown assessment assists the human expert, leading to improved quality of the structural integrity assessment. The project will enable digital twin-based surveys as industrial standard and realize economic and safety benefits as well as reducing environmental footprint due to reduced need for travels. 

The innovation will lead to improved quality and safety of vessel inspection services, in particular: 
1. Hull condition assessment and continuous compliance decision in a 3D digital twin, a multi-data digital representation of the physical hull based on data such as high-precision point clouds, videos, AIS and weather data. The digital twin also holds location-tagged thickness measurements, history of damages and repairs, and data of sister vessels. 
2. High coverage, high-quality, location-tagged data of the hull compartment, collected frequently by autonomous/automated drones with semantic knowledge of the physical structure. Automated data collection ensures standardized data which improves comparison with historical data. Drone-based collection during sailing or between discharge and loading of cargo causes minimal interruption of business operations. 
3. Automated damage detection in point clouds and videos, automated damage probability predictions based on data in the digital twin, and an automatically generated targeted inspection plan for the drones as well when physical inspections are deemed necessary.

Assessment of ship hull Integrity based on a Digital Twin

Trådløs kommunikasjonsrevolusjon i maritim industri

Scandinavian Reach Technologies leder et banebrytende prosjekt for trådløs kommunikasjon i stålkonstruksjoner, som skip. ScanReach fokuserer på å forbedre sitt produkt for trådløs tilkobling om bord (OWC) for å møte de økende kravene fra den maritime industrien, offshore og havvindindustrien, som raskt går over til digitale og IoT-baserte operasjoner for forbedret effektivitet, sikkerhet og motstandsdyktighet.

Innovativ teknologi: Teknologien er designet for å muliggjøre trådløs kommunikasjon i stål-dominerte miljøer, en kjent utfordring i den maritime sektoren. Denne teknologien baserer seg på lavenergi-radio meshnettverksnoder som muilggjør trådløs datatransport gjennom skip, og baner vei for diverse IoT-applikasjoner som sporing av personell og eiendeler, og integrering av miljøsensorer. Med en industri som beveger seg mot digitale tvillinger, maskinlæring og overvåking av energiforbruk i sanntid, utvikler selskapet neste generasjon av avanserte kommunikasjonsnoder. Disse nodene er ment å håndtere større mengder trådløse data, noe som gjør dem passende for de høyteknologiske kravene til moderne skipsfart.

Fordeler over tradisjonelle systemer: Denne innovasjonen skiller seg ut fra tradisjonelle trådløse løsninger som ofte sliter i tette stålrike skipmiljøer og bruk av kabler. Den fjerner behovet for omfattende og kostbar kabling, noe som fører til en forenklet infrastruktur, enklere installasjon og lavere vedlikeholdskostnader.

This project strives to advance wireless communication in large steel structures, such as ships, improving our existing Onboard Wireless Connectivity (OWC) product. This enhancement will bolster Scandinavian Reach Technologies AS market presence and relevance in the competitive shipping industry. The primary need for this innovation arises from the maritime, offshore, and sea wind industries. These industries are transitioning towards digital and IoT-based operational models for efficiency, safety, and resilience. 

Scandinavian Reach Technologies is at the forefront of addressing this need. Its revolutionary technology enables efficient wireless communication within confined steel environments. It eliminates the need for costly and complex cabling based on an innovative, low-power radio mesh networking node that allows wireless data transport to the gateway/edge computer throughout the mesh network. This technology paves the way for various IoT applications, such as tracking personnel and assets, collecting environmental sensor readings, and integrating other third-party sensors.
 
While the company's current mesh nodes are designed for simple sensor data and limited data volumes, the emerging ambitions for Digital Twins, Machine Learning models, and Real-time Energy Consumption monitoring in the industry have created a demand for high-volume wireless data transport to an internet endpoint. To meet this demand, Scandinavian Reach Technologies AS is dedicated to developing next-generation communication nodes capable of handling large amounts of wireless data in complex steel environments to replace signal cabling entirely.

Den internasjonale sjøfartsorganisasjonen (IMO) har satt et mål om å redusere klimagassutslippene (GHG) fra skipsfarten med 50 % innen 2050 sammenlignet med 2008-nivået. For å oppnå dette, innfører IMO avkarboniseringsregler, inkludert bruk av alternative drivstoff og krav om å regne ut drivstoffets GHG-utslipp på en helhetlig måte. Livsløpsutslipp av drivstoff omfatter utslipp fra råvareutvinning og -behandling, drivstoffproduksjon, transport, distribusjon og drivstoffbruk om bord på skipet. Men det er vanskelig å spore livsløpsutslipp av drivstoff nøyaktig på grunn av de mange drivstoffproduksjonsveiene som fører til svært forskjellige utslippsintensiteter for drivstoff, selv om drivstoffene er kjemisk identiske. I tillegg er drivstofforsyningskjeden for maritim sektor svært kompleks, noe som bidrar til vanskelighetsgraden av oppgaven. I et så komplekst drivstoffproduksjons- og reguleringsmiljø er det avgjørende med åpenhet, sporbarhet og nøyaktighet av utslippsdata. Uten å dokumentere og verifisere drivstoffets GHG-utslipp nøyaktig, er det umulig å måle framgangen i maritim avkarbonisering. Det digitale drivstoffpasset (DFP) har som mål å løse disse utfordringene ved å vise at det er mulig å dokumentere, spore og verifisere GHG-utslipp av marine drivstoff på tvers av drivstofforsyningskjeden. Dette vil bli oppnådd ved å bruke teknologiske byggesteiner: Livsløpsvurderingsmetode, drivstoffmerkingsteknologi og blokkjedeteknologi. Disse teknologiene er tilgjengelige og allerede godt etablerte. Etter vellykket demonstrasjon av prosjektet, kan drivstoffprodusenter, rederier og myndigheter stole på nøyaktigheten av dataene som genereres og deles gjennom DFP-systemet for kommersielle, regulatoriske og rapporteringsbehov. Dette hjelper med å spore utslippsreduksjonsmål for alle parter. Det fremmer også åpenhet, ansvarlighet, samarbeid og handling for bærekraft.

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) only regulates the greenhouse gas emission of fuels from Tank-To-Wake but in the coming few years it is set to include Well-To-Tank emissions as well. We anticipate that documenting and verifying Well-To-Tank emissions of fuels will be more difficult than Tank-To-Wake emissions, primarily due to the multitude of feedstocks, energy sources and fuel production ways used to supply fuels. The Digital Fuel Passport project aims to accurately document and verify emissions incurred in the entire fuel value chain from raw material sourcing to fuel use, incorporating both Well-To-Tank and Tank-To-Wake emissions.
The DFP fosters collaboration among stakeholders within the fuel supply chain. The project will be enabled through multidisciplinary convergence of LCA of fuel emissions, fuel marking and laboratory analysis, and the use of distributed ledger technology. This initiative aims to bridge the existing trust gap among fuel suppliers, fuel users, regulators, and society at large. By doing so, it seeks to establish transparency, accuracy, and a consistent methodology for measuring and reporting emissions throughout the entire fuel value chain.  
To accomplish this objective, the project has formed partnerships with shipping companies, fuel producers, certification bodies, and fuel marking companies, all of whom share a vested interest in achieving the project's objectives. Successful completion of the project will represent a pivotal milestone in the pursuit of the IMO decarbonization target. By documenting emissions incurred throughout the fuel value chain, the DFP project empowers stakeholders with the transparency and trust needed to help the shipping industry to decarbonize. Several R&D challenges will be tackled in the project including how to link fuel emission data efficiently and reliably with fuel marker properties and identification of suitable fuel markers for green marine fuels.

Digital Fuel Passport

Morrow Batteries jobber for å bli verdensledende på produksjon av bærekraftige og kostnadseffektive batterier. I 2024 åpner Morrows første batterifabrikk for prismatiske battericeller i Arendal i Sør-Norge, og Morrow har som mål å produsere 42 GWh battericeller årlig fra 2028. Morrow sin generasjon 2 teknologi retter seg mot koboltfrie batterier basert på høy-spennings LNMO katoder. Denne unike cellekjemien er både mer bærekraftig og billigere enn eksisterende teknologier, i tillegg til at den høye spenningen gir høy energitetthet. Dagens batterielektrolytter er derimot utviklet for batterier med lavere spenning og må derfor tilpasses LNMO kjemien.

NORSE-HV prosjektet er et samarbeid mellom Morrow Batteries og Institutt for Energiteknologi (IFE). Prosjektet skal i hovedsak utvikle nye sammensetninger av batterielektrolytter som er stabile ved høyere spenninger og dermed kan benyttes i Morrows generasjon 2 battericeller. Et vellykket prosjekt vil muliggjøre industrialisering av koboltfrie Li-ion batterier basert på LNMO.

Lithium nickel manganese oxide (LNMO) is a high-voltage battery cathode material whose sustainability and low cost arises due to the elimination of cobalt and reduced use of nickel compared to many current cathode materials. The high voltage applied in LNMO cells can cause the electrolyte solution to break down, reducing the amount of energy the battery can store and shortening its useful lifetime. The NORSE-HV project aims to formulate and test new electrolyte solutions that are more stable towards high voltages, so that the cycle life of LNMO batteries can be extended. Morrow Batteries and the Institute for Energy Technology (IFE) will combine their years of experience in battery development and testing to identify new electrolytes for LNMO batteries. Novel electrolyte candidates will be assessed both chemically and electrochemically and battery cell testing will be carried out in various cell formats to ensure industrial feasibility. These innovative electrolytes will then be incorporated into LNMO prismatic cells, to be manufactured at Morrow’s factory in Arendal.

The project will collect field vegetation phenology and biomass data to map the growing season and plant production in the Svalbard archipelago. A collection of field data used to validate satellite images will minimize errors in Landsat 8 sensor calibration. Results will be used to create a cloud-free time series of validated Landsat 8 images, which will allow us to analyse the growing season at a vegetation type level.
