From dark to light - development of Phaeocystis pouchetii spring blooms

Awarded: NOK 36,999

The haptophyte Phaeocystis pouchetii is a key arctic phototroph capable of forming massive blooms. It is one of the important spring bloom species. This project will collect new data and combine this with already collected samples from the Isfjorden Adventfjorden (IsA) marine time series station. DNA and RNA community samples from two size fractions (> 10um and 0.45-10 um) will be used for quatitative PCR of several Phaeocystis genes, to obtain quantitative data on the abundance, life-stage and photosynthetic activities. Years influenced by Arctic or Atlantic conditions will be compared.
