Øke den norske deltakelsen til EU H2020 Blue-Action

The Arctic warming is expected to have an impact on extreme weather and climate over the Northern Hemisphere. However, recent reviews suggested that the Arctic warming impacts vary regionally and seasonally, and individual modelling studies can even be contradictory. The simulated Arctic warming by coupled climate models is often biased as shown in the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5 (CMIP5) and also likely in CMIP6. Consequently, the models are biased as to the impact of the Arctic warming. The specifically designed coordinated multi-model experiments in EU H2020 Blue-Action will be used to investigate the Arctic warming impact and its modulation by the Atlantic and extra-tropic Pacific oceans on the Arctic warming impact since 1979. In this project (NorBlue), we will investigate the Arctic warming impact and its modulation by the tropical Pacific Ocean since 1979 to strengthen the Norwegian contribution to EU H2020 Blue-Action. For reporting period, 1. project member attended the EGU General Assembly May 4-8, 2020 (online); 2. We found that colder-than-normal Eurasian winters over past decades were more linked to the high Arctic warming instead of surface warming; 3. We do not find significant impact of tropical sea surface temperature on the warm Arctic-cold Eurasia.

I dette prosjektet har vi undersøkt om det er en påvirkning av tropisk havoverflatetemperatur på oppvarmingen i Arktis ved å utføre ytterligere numeriske modell eksperiment. Vi (Universitetet i Bergen og Nansensenteret for Miljø og Fjernmåling) organiserte den andre EU Climate Modelling 'Workshop on Climate Prediction in the Atlantic-Arctic sector'. Vi deltok på EGU konferansen 4-8. mai i 2020 (online), og en workshop har blitt organisert med alle de norske partnerne i EU H2020 Blue-Action og EU H2020 Applicate for å koordinere de norske bidragene.

Blue-Action: Arctic Impact on Weather and Climate er et prosjekt under Research and Innovation Actions (RIA) bevilget av Horizon 2020, hvor følgende tema blir undersøkt: BG-10-2016 Impact of Arctic changes on the weather and climate of the Northern Hemisphere (Virkninger av endringer I Arktis på vær og klima på den nordlige halvkule). Nansensenteret er leder for arbeidsgruppen WP3 og to oppgaver under WP3. I WP3 vil vi undersøke virkningene av endringer i den Arktiske sjøisen og hvordan virkningene endrer seg ved forandringer i Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO) og Interdedacal Pacific Oscillation (IPO) . Arbeidet vil bli utført ved å analysere koordinerte multi-modell eksperiment. Tidligere studier har, på den andre siden, foreslått at det tropiske Stillehavet også kan påvirke vær og klima på den nordlige halvkule. I denne prosjektsøknaden vil vi styrke det norske bidraget i EU H2020 Blue-Action ved å øke det norske bidraget; øke synligheten av de norske deltakerne i Blue-Action ved å delta på relevante internasjonale konferanser og workshops; og styrke det nasjonale nettverk og koordinasjon ved å organisere en workshop.
