Paratuberculosis is one of the largest global problems for livestock production today, with a large negative financial impact. An effective vaccine against paratuberculosis would help solve a serious animal health problem. It would also greatly benefit Norway and other countries where the disease is currently under control, since the disease is highly contagious and vaccination would reduce the risk of reintroduction of the disease and the accompanying high cost burden. Due to the high demand for a solution, a paratuberculosis vaccine is an attractive commercial opportunity. The vaccines currently on the market do not prevent disease transmission and they give false positive results on tests for paratuberculosis and bovine tuberculosis. This limits the degree of vaccination and the consequent sales of such vaccines globally. The Veterinary Institute (VI), in cooperation with the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) and the State Serum Institute (SSI), has developed a pilot vaccine that has shown promising results that do not interfere with the disease diagnosis, unlike today’s vaccines. In the FORNY project, VI, DTU and SSI will verify the effect of the pilot vaccine, thus providing the scientific basis for a future solution to a large global problem within animal farming.
