Circular Alumina Production

Awarded: NOK 0.90 mill.

The CIRCALU acronym stand for CIRCular ALUmina production. The goal of the project is to look at the possibilities of commercial exploitation of the results of the EU project called ENSUREAL in Norway. The ENSUREAL project is aiming at developing a new production process for alumina. Alumina is the raw material that is used to produce aluminium metal. This new process exploits more of the elements that are present in bauxite and creates less waste, most importantly the issue with deposition of red mud is altogether eliminated. In the project, it is studied whether an alumina plant in Mo I Rana is a sensible thing from an economical and environmental perspective. The CIRCALU project looks at possible synergies, concerning materials, cooling water and CO2 management, with the companies in and around Mo i Rana.

Assessment of secondary raw materials and by-products of alumina production in Mo i Rana has been performed Review of energy and CO2 management of alumina production in Mo i Rana has been performed. Two workshops with stakeholders have been organized.

The CIRCALU project will involve Norwegian stakeholders in order to transfer knowledge from the ENSUREAL project. The ENSUREAL project is mostly focused on alumina production on a site in Greece. The CIRCALU project will examine alumina production in Mo i Rana.
