The ArbaFeed project will make pellets, feed protein and furfural from wood. The aim of the project is to further develop Arbaflame's existing patented technology for the production of Arbacore pellets based on steam explosion of sawmill chips. This will be central to being able to cope with competition for Arbaflame as a pellet supplier, while at the same time enabling cost-effective production of sustainable feed protein for fish farming, which is in great demand in the Norwegian aquaculture industry.
The R&D challenges are great, as this involves a major change in the process of making pellets, while at the same time producing feed protein and furfural as additional products. The project will: (1) develop cost-effective production of high energy density and good strength Arbacore pellets (2) utilize hemicellulose sugars in the feedstock to produce feed protein for fish feed by fermentation, and (3) produce a furfural solution that can be further processed into furfuryl alcohol.
The potential for using the project results is great for both Arbaflame and their partners. We expect this to contribute to increased value creation for Arbaflame, reduced carbon footprint in the production and use of pellets, and enable cost-effective production of a sustainable feed protein of great benefit to the Norwegian aquaculture industry.
