Foreløpig arbeidstittel:Geofysiske dypdykk i middelalderhavnen ved Avaldsnes: Nye metoder for kartlegging av kulturminner under vann

This PhD project is a collaboration between GeoPluss, UiS and MUST Stavanger Maritime Museum and is an integral part of the municipal research project ??The Port of Power?? (Maktens Havn). This unique project combines archeology and technology in a research study providing a revolutionary advanced knowledge of mankind?s common cultural heritage. The pristine and well-preserved harbor area at Avaldsnes is in danger of vanishing before being properly investigated. Modern shipping, climate change, new marine life and rising sea level disrupt and erode the seabed?s cultural layers and results in shipwrecks deteriorating more rapidly than before. To ensure that the past of our maritime history is accurately documented before it is too late, Avaldsnes Harbor must be examined using modern science and non-destructive methods. The objective is to document and preserve as much of the cultural heritage of Avaldsnes as possible for future generations through mapping and investigations and to gain new insights into the daily life in a medieval harbor. The PhD project will contribute to this by using geophysical methods and advanced technology from the subsea industry identifying and mapping cultural heritage sites on the seabed. Using high-tech equipment such as multibeam echosounder, ROV and sub bottom profiler (CHIRP), data will be collected and used to accurately locate cultural layers, structures, objects and wrecks. Much emphasis will be placed on develop methodologies for acquisition and processing of near surface geophysical 3D data for archaeological purposes, and to identify the optimal combinations of different data sets reducing the uncertainty related to the data analysis. The data will be corelated with geological classification and observations in core samples and shafts from surveys conducted by MUST Stavanger Maritime Museum and Archaeological Museum, UiS.

Doktergradsprosjektet er et samarbeid mellom GeoPluss, UiS og MUST Stavanger maritime museum og vil inngå som en del av et større forskningsprosjekt, Maktens havn. Prosjektet skal kombinere arkeologi og teknologi i en grensesprengende forskningsundersøkelse som vil gi helt ny kunnskap om vår felles kulturarv. Det unike og velbevarte havneområdet ved Avaldsnes står i fare for å gå tapt før det blir undersøkt. Moderne skipsfart, klimaendringer, nytt marint liv og stigende havnivå forstyrrer og eroderer kulturlagene på havbunnen. Dette gjør at også skipsvrak forvitrer hurtigere enn før. For å sikre at kunnskapen om vår maritime historie dokumenteres før det er for sent skal havnen undersøkes ved hjelp av moderne og skånsomme metoder. Målet er å dokumentere og bevare så mye som mulig av kulturminnene på Avaldsnes til fremtidige generasjoner. En maritimarkeologisk undersøkelse knyttet sammen med bruk av geofysiske metoder og teknologi fra subsea-industrien vil være nøkkelen til å forstå hvorfor og hvordan Avaldsnes har vokst frem som maktsenter og gi en unik innsikt i dagliglivet i en middelalderhavn.
