Combined use of lice attracting light and lice immobilisation by ultrasound was studied in cages at IMR's research station in Austevoll during 40 days in the summer 2022. The number of mobile - fixed - adult female lice on salmon in one light and ultrasound exposed cage was compared to the average lice number in eight reference cages (no light and ultrasound exposure). The performed test indicated no effect of combined attracting light and ultrasound on the number of lice on salmon.
The test results from Luxonic are important info for a new application for testing LED lights, Ultra sound and UVC lights to reduce salmon lice problems
The main test will be performed in a commercial, marine cage in Norway. Our system must be able to maintain these conditions throughout the growing cycle, from initial stocking of smolts to harvesting. We have planned five major challenges for the LuxSonic project:
1. Get the optimum dose of ultrasound and the right time for sea lice mortality
2. Use the most attractive light spectrum for lice with sufficient power to limit the number of devices to be implanted per cage
3. Build a treatment area that allows the containment of sufficient head lice while being acceptable in terms of space requirements
4. Integrate these different technologies into a functional and practical whole
5. Make a finished product that is low in energy consumption in order to limit the cost of use
The project will last 24 months, and activities have been divided into 6 Work Packages (WPs):
WP1, "NECESSARY LIGHT DEFINITION" detecting the most attractive artificial light technical parameters for sea lice
WP2, "ULTRASONIC SYSTEM ADJUSTMENT AND CONFIGURATION" will study the optimal treatment by measuring sea lice lethality after ultrasound exposure
WP3, "DESIGN OF THE PROCESSING AREA" will design/testing a mechanical assembly that will integrate the two previous subsystems
WP4, "INTEGRATION" will aim to assemble the 3 subsystems into a single finished product, to create the entire human-machine interface and its interoperability. We will then test the system in an operational sea salmon cage
WP5, "OPERATION / COMMUNICATION / MARKETING PLAN" will present our plans for marketing LuxSonic in Norway, the UK, Chile and Canada in the years 2023-2027
WP6, "MANAGEMENT / COORDINATION", will monitor the progress made by each partner towards the agreed milestones and results, approve all procurement and expenditure decisions, manage all reports required for Eurostars projects, proactively monitor risks and obstacles during the work and, if necessary, make possible changes to the work plan.
