The research and development project's main goal is to develop a new Integrated Electric Sealing System (IESS) to increase operational reliability during well intervention, and to increase the recovery rate of existing oil wells. IESS may also be able to be used in "deep sea mining applications". IESS is based on new innovative and patented technology. When used for well intervention, the IESS system is installed as part of the well control system to provide a seal when running various tools in the well. A separate energy storage unit, the ePod, is designed as an integral part of the IESS which will increase power supply security. The main principle is that an electric current is passed through the liquid inside the sealing body in the presence of an intense magnetic field. An electrolyte is injected into the liquid to increase its electrical conductivity. Functionally, the fluid moves in the same way as the conductive part of an electric motor, pushing the fluid downward to control the pressure in the well. The project management is set up so that Enhanced Recovery Technologies AS as the main partner has the overall project management, assisted by a project manager at our partner HUGG MultiControl Sp z o. o. in Krakow, who has technical expertise and management experience from the oil and gas sector and the R&D sector. In the project, we have carried out the following activities: 1) Project management 2) Electrochemical study, analysis and design of electrolyte in the sealing gap 3) Mechanical design electrolyte injection 4) Electromechanical design 5) Mechanical design of seal and accessories 6) Design of power supply system In the project, we have carried out hydraulic, mechanical, chemical and electrical analyzes and calculations. Detailed technical design is being carried out.

The Integrated Electric Sealing System (IESS), which shall be used in well Intervention, aims to increase the safety during operations, and the recovery rate on existing oil wells and for future deep-sea mining applications. The functionality is to control the well pressure and seal around intervention and drilling tools while performing well operations. The marked is continuously requesting for cost-effective and environmental technology to enable increased oil recovery from oil wells. IESS will make it possible for intervention tool and drill strings to be installed without stop in the operation to load tool into a well. IESS technology is attractive because it is based on magneto hydro dynamic principles and has no moving mechanical parts.

The project aims to establish cooperation with the identified companies (SMEs) to conduct research and development of the Integrated Electric Sealing System (IESS) which shall be used in well intervention to increase the safety during operations, and the recovery rate on existing oil Well’s and for deep-sea mining applications. IESS is based on new innovative technology. When used for Well Intervention the IESS System will be installed as part of the Well Control System to provide sealing when running different tools into the Well. A separate Energy Storage unit, ePod, will be designed as a integral part as IESS. The ePod will increase safety regarding power supply during operations. The IESS technology will also be used for deep sea mining applications. An electric current is passed through the fluid inside the seal body in the presence of an intense magnetic field, which interacts with the magnetic field of the current through the fluid. An electrolyte (if required) is inserted into the fluid in order to increase its electrical conductivity. Functionally, the fluid is then the moving similarly to the conductive part of an electric motor, pushing the fluid in the downward direction to control the pressure in the well. The project management is set up in a way where Enhanced Recovery Technologies AS as main partner holds the project manager for the whole project, assisted by project manager of our partner HUGG MultiControl Sp z o.o located in Krakow, Poland, who has technical and managerial experience in the oil and gas sector and in the R&D sector. The R&D project should be completed within 30 months.
