Horizon Europe (HE) has placed a greater emphasis than Horizon 2020 on innovation and pursues achieving larger social and economic effects of research and innovation whilst providing visible and concrete results for the European population. IFE has been working systematically to implement a strategy for European initiatives and has constantly increased its presence and relevance in new markets and projects both, in Norway and internationally. The Institute has had a remarkable success in the latest Horizon 2020 and is currently involved in 22 European projects. IFE's research targets developing new and sustainable solutions to societal challenges where there are large markets in Norway and globally under the vision of «research for a better future». The UN's sustainability goals are among the top priorities of IFE’s activities and are basic pillars of the strategy. IFE will further develop its EU strategy in 2021 and 2022 and use the funds to fully unlock the potential of the Institute towards the new HE. IFE creates bridges between research, education and industrial activities. With world-class leading researchers, extensive infrastructure and full-scale laboratories, IFE lifts projects from theoretical models to commercial activities. IFE's strategic focus areas within renewable and environmentally friendly energy, climate-friendly solutions, digitalisation, safety and health match the European priorities and societal challenges that HE wants to solve. The Institute is committed to bring added value to society, our partners and customers by being at the forefront of research whilst developing sustainable solutions to key challenges, strengthening the value creation in Norway. IFE will contribute increasing the international visibility of the Norwegian research environment, strengthen the commercialization of research outcomes and contribute to larger value creation whilst contributing to the development of new knowledge-based companies.

IFE skal bringe merverdi til samfunnet, våre partnere og kunder ved å være i front i utvikling av mer bærekraftige løsninger på viktige samfunnsutfordringer, samtidig som vi bidrar til å styrke verdiskapingen i Norge. Instituttet har fra 2017 arbeidet systematisk med implementering av strategi for europeisk satsing. IFEs forskning er innrettet mot å utvikle nye og bærekraftige løsninger på samfunnsutfordringer hvor det er store markeder i Norge og globalt. IFE opplever en stor etterspørsel etter vår kunnskap og tjenester, og har vunnet stadig nye markeder og prosjekter både i Norge og internasjonalt. IFE planlegger å sende over 70 søknader til Horisont Europa i 2021 og 2022 og ønsker å posisjonere seg som en sentral forskningspartner. Temaene vi ser muligheter innenfor er Hydrogen, Batteriteknologi, Bioøkonomi, Null Forurensing og Miljøteknologi, Cybersikkerhet, Energisystemer, Geotermi, Miljøvennlige Industriprosesser og Teknologier, Sirkulær Økonomi, Nøytronkarakterisering, Solkraft, Helse, Nukleærmedisin, Karbonfangst og Lagring og Virtuell/utvidet virkelighet og Risiko, sikkerhet og sikring. IFE skal delta i partnerskap mot opplæringsprogrammer som Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA). Instituttet ønsker å bidra til opplæring av ph.d.-studenter og bidra til å utvikle fremragende forskning hos fremtidige fagpersoner. Instituttet ønsker å prioritere et godt samspill mellom nasjonale virkemidler og Horisont Europa rammeprogram, men også bruke rammeverket for Horisont Europa til i å styrke samarbeidet med andre nasjonale forskningsinstitutter.
