The research idea is to generate and connect metadata from different sources; OCR, HTR, born-digital text, transcriptions from AV sources as well as 2D and 3D images with metadata. Advanced semantic processing will connect the metadata, and enable automatic storytelling, intelligent adaptive searches, personal recommendations and spatio-temporal mapping, e.g. “travels” in time and/or space. We also assume that objects, photos, plans and other information can be linked to their geolocation while on the same time the system can derive geolocation like countries, cities and places from unstructured data like text and historical documents and then link them together in a way so spatial correlations can be detected. “Who was here 100 years ago and what did they see?” The RIA project should demonstrate how the new technologies, methods and data formats would help to present cultural and historic remains and memories in a comprehensive and attractive though scientifically based way, supporting the promotion of Europe’s cultural heritage (CH). Proposals should also show how the preservation and analysis of the tangible and intangible resources of our CH would enhance our understanding of cultural history. They will deliver solutions to the problem that language change hampers static ways of retrieving the information from historic data collections. The economic impact for the creative industries and the scientific impact for cultural institutional content-owners will include gains from use and re-use of digital assets.
