International shipping is an indispensable logistic channel for the global economy which accounts for 80% of the total global trade volume. In addition, waterborne transport is recognized as the most efficient way of cargo transportation. Furthermore, the digital transformation is increasingly playing an important role in the shipping industry. Ships are expected to be equipped with more advanced equipment and less crew onboard. These changes bring both challenges and opportunities. Assuring the safety and efficiency of maritime activities will become even more important and will require new approaches to exploit the benefits from digitalization. Assurance of ships is to determine that a ship meets regulations and operational requirements. Classification societies performing independent third-party surveys have been providing assurance services to the maritime industry since the days of sailing ships. Most of the services are executed through onboard inspection and verification of documents. However, events influencing the technical status and hence the safety of the ship may occur that may not be discovered until the next scheduled survey. Increasingly complex systems, tight operation schedules, environmental requirements and many other factors are introducing novel risks with regards to safety and efficiency. That is why real-time assurance is becoming increasingly relevant. Real-time assurance should provide an assurance service that is continuously monitoring the ship operation and safety status. Such a service will present the live operational and safety status of the ship and recommend or even require interventions based on the current state of the vessel. The objective of this research is to explore and create a real-time assurance framework for ship operation and safety enhancement. Using this framework and state-of-the-art techniques for forecasting and optimization, more accurate and timely evaluation of safety, performance and reliability will be achieved.

International shipping is an indispensable logistic channel for the global economy which accounts for 90% of the total global trade volume. In addition, waterborne transport is recognized as the most efficient way of cargo transportation. The increasing trend of shipping activities will just continue with the global economy. Furthermore, the digital transformation is playing an important role in the shipping industry. Ships are expected to be equipped with more advanced equipment and less crew onboard. The connectivity between ships and shore is improving. These changes bring both challenges and opportunities. Assuring the safety and efficiency of shipping will become even more important, and will require new approaches to exploit the benefits from digitalization and connectivity. This PhD project aims to explore new methods to monitor ship operations, which can help decision-makers enhance the safety and improve the operational efficiency. Assurance of ships is to determine that a ship and its equipment meet regulations and operational requirements. DNV has been providing assurance services for the maritime industry for many years. Most of the services were executed through onboard inspection and verification of documents. This makes the Class status (Classification and certificate related situation) not up to date. That is why real-time assurance is becoming increasingly relevant. Real-time assurance is to provide assurance service that continuously monitoring the ship operation and safety status. Such a service will present the live status of operation and safety and recommend improvement actions based on the assurance evaluation. The objective is to explore and create the real-time assurance framework of ship operation and safety enhancement. Using this framework and state-of-the-art techniques of forecasting and optimization, we can more accurately evaluate assurance status and reliability to improve safety and efficiency.
