Sustainable energy sources such as solar and wind power will be very important together with efficient energy storage system that is more low-cost and environmental. Beyonder (BYO) has developed a sustainable hybrid electrochemical energy storage cell, a Li-ion capacitor (LIC), that bridges the gap between high storage capacity of lithium-ion batteries (LiB) and the high-power/fast-charging capability of supercapacitors. Instead of rare minerals, BYO use sawdust in the production of high-quality activated carbon (Super Activated Carbon, SAC). BYO is planning a full-scale production of LiC batteries from end of 2024 and will require 2,5 ton SAC/day. Today BYO produce SAC on lab scale with a production of 500 g/batch. The main goal of this project is to transfer the preparation process developed at small-scale to a process that can be applied at larger scale, while retaining the desired properties of the product. BYO has signed a MoU with Tschudi Bio Company (TBC) for a full-scale manufacturing of SAC using bio-product from Bergene Holms (BH) sawmill in Haslestad and with WAI Environmental Solutions AS (WAI) because of their test facilities and experience in engineering advanced machines and production lines. For this Innovation project, a postdoc and two master students from NTNU will participate solving R&D challenges, as well as research will be performed by BYO and WAI. In addition, high temperature carbon analysis (rotary kiln analysis) will be performed at The Karlsruhe Institute of Technology in Germany. BYO, TBC, WAI and BH plan to establish a SAC plant in Vestfold at BH sawmill at Haslestad. The SAC plant will be a Special Purpose Vehicle company, financed separately and governed by a shareholder agreement between BYO, TBC and WAI. BYO will provide long term SAC offtake-agreement with the plant.
