Gustav Vigeland (1869–1943) dominated the Norwegian sculpture scene for nearly four decades, and thus holds a central place in Norwegian art history. In the recent 25 years, however, only two scientific theses have been written about his art, and the number of research-based articles is also limited. One explanation for this lack of interest may be that the attention has been almost solely directed towards Vigeland's late production, more specifically at the sculptures now situated in the Vigeland Park. These works are characterized by a monumental idiom that many find problematic. This one-sided focus on Vigeland's late production has caused us to miss important aspects of his art. The notion of Vigeland as reactionary is deeply rooted in the art historical milieu. This project seeks to challenge this notion and open up for an alternative reading of his art.
The project will explore Vigeland’s position in the development of modern sculpture, both nationally and internationally. Can he be reckoned as one of the modern? Which characteristics does his art share with the artists considered pioneers within this development, and in what way did he challenge the established tradition? The focus will be on Vigeland's early works, more specifically sculptures created before a stylistic change occurred in his art around 1912. In this period, Vigeland usually worked in a smaller format, and his works often thematize loneliness, anxiety and alienation. He also made a number of his best-known portraits and monuments before 1912.
An approach to the problem presupposes a critical discussion of the concept of modernism and modernism as an artistic ideology. The project will take a closer look at the modernist tradition within the field of sculpture, starting from Rosalind Krauss and her theories about modern sculpture, and further how this tradition has been challenged in recent times.
helt sentral plass i norsk kunsthistorie.
blitt utfordret i nyere tid.
