PROBE, the Norwegian proteomic platform, was established in 2002 by the Norwegian Research Council under the Functional Genomics Initiative (FUGE) to provide the Norwegian scientific community access to the best in proteomic technologies and competence. Located within the Institute of Biomedicine, University of Bergen, PROBE serves both the local and National community with proteomic expertise. PROBE is committed to function as a national expertise centre that focuses on proteomics technology, developme nt and application. Such long term commitments to integrated genomics initiatives are essential to keep the Norwegian genomics efforts globally competitive. PROBE is a platform for hypothesis-driven research, service and educational facilities that striv e to develop technologies and tools in proteomics for researchers and industry partners. PROBE has focused on implementing and developing proteomics methods and aims to continue this by addressing defined bottlenecks in proteomic research primarily by ins tigating method development in key research areas. These newest proteomic approaches are applicable to allareasof biological research includingbasic cell biology, medicine and marine research, in collaboration with leading scientists both nationally and i nternationally and via its service functions and educational programs available to all Norwegian scientific institutions. Extra investments are required to maintain the existing scientific infrastructure and to keep it internationally competitive. We hav e outlined a budget that will maintain and improve upon the existing infrastructure at PROBE and in addition will continue to provide excellence in proteomic development also for the Norwegian research community at large through the planned consortium net work.
