FUGE-Funksjonell genomforskn.i Norg

A National Service Platform for Global Analysis of Genome Structure and Function. The Norwegian Microarray Consortium (NMC)

Awarded: NOK 9.7 mill.

The FUGE Microarray Platform is run by the Norwegian Microarray Consortium (NMC), based on a formal institutional collaboration between RR/UiO, NTNU, and UiB. We offer in-house production of standard and custom arrays, expression and genomic profiling ser vices (RNA or DNA in-DATA out) with different technologies, and user support on experimental design and data analysis. NMC also offers courses and training. The bioinformatics effort is a close collaboration with the FUGE Bioinformatics platform. Based o n this, NMC has greatly facilitated microarray-based functional genomics in Norway. NMC has trained and served more than 270 Norwegian reseachers, and a number of international customers. We have established strategic collaborations with international mic roarray centers. NMC has also been instrumental in the development of bioinformatics tools, such as J-Express, PubGene and GeneTools. A user survey in Sept.-Oct. 2005 showed satisfaction with NMC services. Competence and local support were the most import ant aspects. Microarray technology develops continuously, and NMC will continue to offer state-of-the-art methods to Norwegian science. We will further improve the complete experimental services (RNA in-DATA out) and down-stream bioinformatics and integra tive genomics in FUGE-II. New array types will be implemented, including splicing arrays, genome-tiling, ChIP-on-chip, methylation assays, miRNA and other formats. We will also support chip-based genome-wide SNP genotyping in biomedicine. A national netwo rk is increasingly relevant due to the many new technologies and applications requiring large investments and specific competence. The consortium model ensures minimum investment and maximum total competence, flexibility, capacity, and robustness. During FUGE-II, we will mentor a new generation of genomics scientists who towards the end of the period can take over the scientific leadership within an institutional framework and further develop the future NMC network.
