Assessing the marine fish diversity of Jan Mayen and adjacent waters towards the 2010 Norwegian Red List

Awarded: NOK 0.32 mill.

The recent version of the Norwegian Red List was published in 2006. Jan Mayen and its adjacent waters is the only Norwegian Territory in the Northern Hemisphere which is not included. An update of the Norwegian Red List is due in 2010, with the aim to inc lude also the area around Jan Mayen. Literature and museum collections dealing with catches from waters around Jan Mayen will be checked. Also data derived from recent surveys (e.g. shrimp surveys of IMR) in the Jan Mayen area will be beneficial, as fish is found as regular bycatch. The project is strongly linked to another submitted research project: "Increasing the knowledge of data-deficient marine fish species towards the 2010 Red List of Norway". Contacts to fish collection curators and museums whic h hold material from the respective area have alredy been made and will also be used to advance this project. Red lists are to be prepared on the basis of the guidelines given by the World Conservation Union (IUCN), including sets of categories and crite ria. The evaluation will conform to these guidelines to enable easy integration into the updated 2010 Norwegian Red List. The realisation of this project will increase the knowledge of the status of the fish stock around Jan Mayen and enchance the informa tion of the Norwegian marine fish diversity.
