Optimization of operation control, capacity estimation and monitoring of gas transport

Awarded: NOK 58,135

The Norwegian gas production is transported in large diameter pipelines to Europe, covering around 15% of the European natural gas consumption. Otimal operation of this network is necessary to continue developing the competitive edge of Norwegian natural gas in Europe, and also embedded in TTA8. Optimal operation of the infrastructure rely strongly on the quality of computer models. Gassco and Polytec wants to be in the forefront developing the best solutions. They have been working together in a user di rected innovation project (162121) since 2004 where the accuracy of the computer models have been investigated. Due to results from the project Gassco has been able to increase their export capacity 1500 MSm³/year, which corresponds to 3 billion NOK/year based on a gas price of 2 NOK/Sm³. As a result of the work in project 162121 new potentials for further optimization the gas network have been identified. However, to pursue these potentials it is necessary to identify more competent partners and adequat e laboratory facilities. Further research in this area may increase the available capacity in addition to optimize the operation of the network further. This work is also crutial for Polytec and Gassco to maintain their world leading position in modelin g and analyses of gas transport. The project will include a Phd in collaboration with both national and international partners, as well as publications and participations on conferences.
