Mangfold og variasjoner i Sør-Norges fangstmarker

The project analyses the basis for a South Sámi prehistory in South Norway. On the one hand it is about which archaeological material that is interpreted as Sámi in South Norway, and on the other hand it is a question of epistemology and who has the power to define history. The result is primarily a source critical analysis of the archaeological material and the interpretations that have been made, but it is also a discussion of how postcolonial perspectives and indigenous perspectives provide both opportunities and limitations in the interpretations. The archaeological material includes so-called hunting ground graves, settlement sites, possible sacrificial sites and stray finds. Through the scrutiny it becomes clear that this combined material is very inconsistent and still quite scarce when considered to support a South Sámi prehistory archaeologically. Particularly I argue that the category ?hunting ground graves? covers so much variety that it should not be used as an entity in the interpretation of the past. The question then is whether the recognition of a weak, archaeological basis must lead to a rejection of a South Sámi prehistory. One can choose to emphasize variations, ambivalence and hybridity and end up with a "Pre-Sámi» prehistory, where ethnic labels are impossible, or we can emphasize a South Sámi prehistory based on criticism and decolonization of Western scientific practice. I mean the postcolonial criticism enables a South Sámi prehistory and thus constitutes an important epistemological tool, but that we also have to accept that all archaeological material may not be possible to categorize ethnically. This non-ethnical "Pre-Sáminess" are nevertheless also part of a South Sámi prehistory.

Prosjektet skal problematisere og nyansere hvordan vi ser på samisk og norrøn/norsk identitet, både i fortid og nåtid. Ved bruk av komparativ metode skal prosjektet undersøke variasjonene i det materialet som hevdes å indikere samisk tilstedeværelse i Sør -Norge, samt diskutere hva disse variasjonene har av betydning for dagens identitetsproduksjon. Prosjektet bidrar således til program for Samisk forskning ved at det fokuserer på kompleksitet og variasjon i den sørsamiske forhistorien, det ser på interaks jon og sameksistens mellom samer og norrøne, og det problematiserer samisk selvartikulering i tid og rom. Til sammen vil dette øke det generelle kunnskapsnivået og danne grunnlag for en bedre forvaltning av samiske kulturminner i Sør-Norge (jf. punkt 2 og 5.2 i programplanen).
