BIOTEK2021-Bioteknologi for verdiskaping

Collaboration initiatives towards the developments of natural plant and marine based products for medical and biotechnological use

Awarded: NOK 0.50 mill.

For thousand of years, humans have used plants to treat diseases, even though the active content of such plants materials were not known neither the mechanism of actions of such compounds. Indeed, many of such compounds from plant origin are still in clin ical practice today. The identification of the active constituent, characterization, synthesis and elucidation of the mechanism of action came years after it was first discovered. The tropical rain forest in Nigeria with its thousands of species has enab led traditional medical practitioners in Nigeria to treat diseases for thousands of years. The same can be said of India. It is noteworthy that many materials from animal and plants origin are still being used today in these countries by traditional medic al practitioners. These provides unique opportunity to research and identify the active substances of the various materials and possible identify new targets and uses for them. This initiative aims to develop a collobaration between scientists from diffe rent countries with broad and specialised techniques in discovery, isolation and characterization of the active constitutes from plants and marine sources. Different sophisticated state - of- the- art experimental and theoretical approaches will be used f or analyses.
