Publiseringsstøtte - Forum for Development Studies

Forum for Development Studies is the leading Nordic journal for development studies with its 45th volume and three issues annually. The journal has consolidated its position as an international, academic journal with the Nordic countries as the main area and with the editorial base in Norway, at the Norwegian Institute of International Affairs (NUPI). Submitted manuscripts and published and downloaded articles demonstrate the journal?s global reach, incl. the global South. The journal is growing rapidly, as illustrated with its about 25000 downloaded articles in 2017, as compared to 4000 in 2013. Downloaded articles distributed by regions show that 47% downloads occurred from North/Central Europe, 15% from North America, 12% from Australasia and 10% from Africa. UK, Norway and the USA are the individual countries with most downloaded articles. In 2017 Forum for Development Studies published three issues, and so far in 2018 two issues have been published (the third comes later this fall). These issues included 44 original peer-review academic articles and five book reviews/ essays. This included, amongst others, a special issue (no. 1, 2017) on ?A changing global development agenda?? drawing on the Nordic Conference on Development Research (NORDEV) in Gothenburg. It also included a special issue (nr. 2, 2018) on ?Qualitative method/ologies in Development Studies?. Submitted manuscripts and the journal?s publications show that diverse research environments chose Forum for Development Studies as an important outlet to promote and highlight their development research. In general, the journal experiences a steady increase of submitted manuscripts, including from countries in the global South. Submitted manuscripts far exceeds what we are able to publish, which is a token of the journal?s academic quality. Forum for Development Studies is jointly owned by NUPI and the Norwegian Association of Development Research, and the publications based on the Norwegian and Nordic research conferences demonstrate this cooperation as well as the journal?s Nordic profile. The journal is a platform for development research in its broad sense. All articles are peer reviewed, using the double blind system. With an interdisciplinary point of departure, the journal publishes articles that explore new perspective within development studies and how these perspectives are relevant to processes of development.

Prosjektfinansiering vil muliggjøre å videreføre arbeidet med de gode prosesser, tiltak og resultater som tidsskriftet Forum for Development Studies (FDS) allerede leverer. Tidsskriftet opplever kraftig kvalitativ og kvantitativ forbedring, med over 16000 nedlastede artikler årlig i 2015 og 2016 (mot 900 i 2010 og 4000 i 2016). Det har også vært en økt tilfang av artikler fra (hovedsakelig) Norge og Norden, og i økende grad fra land utenfor Norden. Videre publiseringsstøtte er avgjørende for at redaksjonen og NUPI, i samarbeid med Routledge, skal kunne videreføre arbeidet med tidsskriftet. FDS bør betraktes og behandles som et redskap for å fremme videre mål og ikke isolert som et forretningsforetak som skal gå i balanse selv om det også er et mål at tidsskriftet på lang sikt skal kunne bli økonomisk selvbærende. Målsettingen for den videre utviklingen av tidsskriftet i perioden 2017 inkluderer bl.a.: 1. Heve det faglige nivået på tidsskriftet ytterligere og fortsette arbeidet med kvalitetssikring. 2. Øke tilfang av artikler, spesielt fra andre nordiske og europeiske fagmiljøer, gjennom styrket/målrettet markedsføring. Dette er viktig i ambisjonen om å øke antall utgivelser til 4 i året. 3. Fortsette arbeidet med å forankre tidsskriftet sterkere i de nordiske miljøene for utviklingsforskning, både i forhold til stofftilfang, distribusjon og tilknytning til utviklingsforskningsorganisasjoner. Relasjonen til de danske, finske og svenske utviklingsforskningsmiljøene skal videreutvikles. 4. Styrke bokanmeldelsesdelen av tidsskriftet og etablere en debattseksjon.
