23rd International Radiocarbon Conference, Trondheim 2018

Awarded: NOK 0.25 mill.

The National Laboratory for Age Determination at NTNU hosted the 23rd International Radiocarbon conference in July 2018 in Trondheim. This series of conferences date back to 1954 and occur every 3 years and have taken place around the globe. They group people involved in the measurement and use of radiocarbon for dating and as a tracer. Almost 300 participants attended the 23rd International Radiocarbon conference from 35 countries. The topics discussed included physics (mainly applied nuclear and accelerator physics), chemistry, geosciences, oceanography and hydrology, and archaeology. More than 350 abstracts were submitted to the conference, of which 18 were selected for plenary oral presentations, 96 in parallel oral sessions and 246 were poster presentations. The abstracts submitted represent the scientific activity of the community as none of the presentations were solicited. Many scientific breakthroughs were presented at the conference. The proceedings of the conference will be published in 2019 in the peer reviewed journal Radiocarbon. About 200 articles were submitted for publication.

There were 360 abstracts submitted to the conference. These resulted in 18 plenary oral presentations, 96 talks in parallel sessions and 246 posters. Many scientific breakthroughs were presented. In addition, the social program facilitated exchanges between scientists from different countries. More than 200 articles have been submitted for the proceedings which will be published in the peer reviewed journal Radiocarbon in 2018.

The National Laboratory for Age Determination at NTNU has been selected (amoung 4 candidate laboratories) to host the 23rd International Radiocarbon conference in 2018. The conference will take place from the 17th to the 22nd of June 2018 in Trondheim. These conferences date back to 1954 and occur every 3 years. The last 3 conferences were in Dakar, Paris, and Hawaii. They group people involved in the measurement and use of radiocarbon dating. The topics discussed include physics (mainly applied nuclear and accelerator physics), chemistry, geosciences, oceanography and hydrology, and archaeology. We expect about 300 participants from around the world. This series of conference is the most important one in the field. This is where new developments are presented. The 23rd conference, in Trondheim, will follow the traditional format of the conference series with an ice breaker reception on Sunday evening and 5 days of oral and poster presentations. In addition, social events will be organised in the evenings to encourage discussions.
