Renewable energy on the high seas – science-informed and indigenous knowledge-based recommendations for regulatory and governance challenges

The high seas are those marine areas under no State's jurisdiction. So far, all marine renewable energy (RE) activity is being conducted under State's jurisdiction. However, recent advances in technology are raising the prospect of carrying out RE activity on the high seas. Currently, only seabed mining activities in the Area have been regulated. The Area is the seabed and ocean floor beyond the limits of State's jurisdiction. From the legal viewpoint, the main gap is a lack of an international regulatory framework, informed by participatory mechanisms and supported by scientific evidence, for RE activities on the high seas, especially regarding their environmental and social impacts.  The primary project objective (O) is to provide the scientific community and policymakers with science-informed and indigenous knowledge-based recommendations in support of the development of  RE regulation on the high seas.  Two specific Os are set to complement the primary O, namely: O1 To advance the use of systematic consultation processes that facilitates research at the crossroads of marine sciences and law.  O2 To advance critical knowledge and understanding of environmental pressing issues comparable to the regulation of RE on the high seas, such as deep-sea mining in the Area. A multistep innovative methodology will be adopted, by integrating marine scientific knowledge, consultative processes, and advanced critical research in the subject matter. A case study (interdisciplinary and participatory) involving marine scientists, indigenous and coastal communities and policy makers will be conducted onboard the Research Vessel KronPrins Haakon at the beginning of the project. The case study outcomes will be analysed through critical legal analysis to build a knowledge base for policy recommendations.  The project will advance the PI’s career in an international research environment, allowing her to generate independent, high-quality, and reproducible results.   

Optimization of Free Space Optical Communication Link based Drones for Search and Rescue Operations in the Arctic Region

The Arctic region is witnessing more frequent shipping accidents than ever which require accurate search and rescue operations. The existing communication systems use drones with radio frequency (RF) technology, which has limited bandwidth and cannot offer 4G/5G connectivity due to harsh weather constraints. It further limits the capacity of drones and affects the resolution of images and videos. The current research proposes to design free space optical communication (FSOC) link-based drones that can enhance connectivity between multiple drones and rescue ships as well as the capacity of drones to produce high resolution images and videos. The proposed FSOC-based drones can provide highspeed connectivity than the existing RF technology. The research will collect atmospheric turbulences data from the Arctic region and use it for designing the FSOC link. Furthermore, to enhance the capacity of FSOC-based drones, the research will design advanced multiplexing schemes (Mode Division Multiplexing and Orthogonal Code Division Multiple Access) and to ensure link stability, omnidirectional receiver will be designed. The research will further evaluate the performance of proposed FSOC link under the impact of various atmospheric turbulences. The expected outcomes of this research will lead to the optimisation of FSOC-based drones in expanding search areas and improving communication systems for SAR operations in the Arctic region.

Currently, 28.2% of the total EU-28 greenhouse gas emissions come from the power sector, a large contributor to greenhouse gas emissions. Consequently, the emphasis of the research in power generation has swung towards assessing highly efficient and greener power cycles. In this reference, the novel supercritical carbon dioxide Brayton cycle (sCO2-BC) is an ideal choice that outstrips other formally well-known power cycles (Brayton & Rankine cycles). In sCO2-BC, the role of the pre-cooler is critical. It serves as a sink to the power cycle and regulates the conditions at the compressor's inlet. The compressor's inlet temperature is intended to be maintained close to the critical temperature of carbon dioxide (CO2) to achieve greater cycle efficiencies. However, exceptionally higher values of the specific heat capacity of CO2 near its critical point (up to 40 times higher than water) require exceedingly high water flow rates on the cold side to achieve the desired exit temperatures of CO2. Consequently, the pre-cooler's pumping power requirements become high enough to deteriorate the cycle's performance. This problem can only be mitigated by exploring new channel geometries with enhanced thermohydraulic characteristics. Therefore, the proposed study plan to characterize the complex thermohydraulic characteristics in the pseudocritical region of CO2 using a multifaceted technique that includes, experimental, numerical, and machine learning techniques. The proposed work will provide a step forward to the success of sCO2-BC technologies that, in turn, will facilitate its integration with the green energy resources (generation-IV nuclear reactors and solar concentrated plants), helping to meet the EU's 2030 climate and energy framework goals of achieving at least 32% share for renewable energy.

Evaluation of thermohydraulic characteristic of printed circuit heat exchangers in pseudocritical region for supercritical CO2 cycle

Visste du at fremtiden for fornybar energi ligger i å utnytte kraften fra havvind til å produsere hydrogen, kjent som grønt hydrogen? Denne innovative tilnærmingen har stor potensial for å oppnå målet om en karbonnøytral fremtid. Imidlertid er det noen utfordringer som må overkommes på veien.
En slik utfordring innebærer bruken av sjeldne jordmaterialer (REE) i magnetene og katalysatorene som er nødvendige både for havvindturbiner og hydrogenproduksjon. Disse materialene er essensielle for effektiv drift av disse systemene. Imidlertid er det bekymringer knyttet til deres forsyning, da majoriteten av REE-produksjonen er konsentrert utenfor EU. Dette, kombinert med økende etterspørsel og geopolitiske spenninger, kan utgjøre en betydelig risiko for Europas forsyning av disse avgjørende materialene.
Som et oppmerksomhetspunkt er produksjonen av REEs assosiert med betydelige miljøpåvirkninger. For hver tonn med REE som produseres, genereres det anslagsvis 2 000 tonn med giftig avfall, inkludert radioaktivt avfall. Tydeligvis er det avgjørende å finne alternativer til REEs for bærekraftig produksjon av grønt hydrogen.
For å møte disse utfordringene har et konsortium av industrielle og forskningspartnere kommet sammen for å utvikle innovative løsninger gjennom INSPIRE-prosjektet. Blant målene til INSPIRE er å optimalisere designet av grønne hydrogenanlegg for å minimere bruken av REEs samtidig som effektivitet og levetid maksimeres. I tillegg har INSPIRE-prosjektet som mål å implementere kunstig intelligens (AI) teknologier for å optimalisere produksjonen av hydrogen fra havvindenergi. Videre vil INSPIRE levere veikart for reduksjon av REE og innovasjoner innen vind-hydrogen for interessenter og EU-politikere.
INSPIRE-prosjektet, ved å kombinere havvindenergi med hydrogenproduksjon, kan skape flerbruksstrukturer som ikke bare genererer ren energi, men også reduserer, resirkulerer og gjenbruker materialer, samtidig som de tåler ekstreme miljøforhold.

In the green hydrogen - the hydrogen from renewable energy such as offshore wind - the rare earth materials (REE) play an important role in the magnet and catalyst needed for both offshore wind and the hydrogen production, respectively. The high production concentration, a growing Chinese domestic market demand and an increased worldwide geopolitical political tensions can pose a high supply risk for Europe. REE production comes also with significant environmental impacts. Some estimations show that for every ton of REE, 2,000 tons of toxic waste, including radioactive waste, are produced . Therefore, as a key pathway for the EU’s net zero commitment, hydrogen produced by wind energy’s potential needs to be fully unlocked. This requires disruptive technologies to achieve this goal. INSPIRE is born in response to the priority area “Development of offshore marine multi-use infrastructures to support the blue economy” to combine marine renewable energy constructions with hydrogen production, to develop multi-use structures and materials to reduce, recycle, reuse and being resistance to extreme environmental conditions. To reach these goals we have set up a consortium of industrial and research partners to optimize green hydrogen system design methodology with minimum REE, to deliver a reference design of an optimized open access 25x15 MW floating wind-hydrogen with minimized REE and optimized lifetime, to implement AI-based wind-hydrogen production optimization and to establish a pathway towards implementation in policy and industrial standards. The core ambition of INSPIRE is to deliver innovative optimized design for REE reduction, and AI-based optimized operation for integrated hydrogen-wind system as well as road maps for EU policy makers.

SBEP - Innovative design and operation for REE reduction and optimized lifetime for next generation offshore wind-based hydrogen production

Det bygde miljøet krever en umiddelbar innføring av ombruksstrategier som adresserer ressursavfalls- og utslippsproblemet. Resirkulering og ombruk begrenses av mangel på prosedyrer for kvalitetsvurdering som reduserer risikoen for industrien. 
Derfor er det nødvendig med en resertifiseringsprosess basert på pålitelig, replikerbar og gjennomførbar tilstandsvurderingsmetodikk for gjenvunnet/innebygd tømmer.
Hovedmålene for prosjektet:
Identifisere settet med ikke-destruktive tester (NDT) som er best egnet for omfattende og effektiv tilstandsvurdering (dvs. tetthet, stivhet, styrke, brannmotstand, defekter, fuktighetsinnhold, fiberretning) i tre som er gjennomførbart for in-situ, samt laboratoriemiljø.
Utvikle prosedyrer for etterbehandling av data fra NDT-er for den høyeste informasjonsverdien og kombinert risiko-/pålitelighet-kvantifisering med en omfattende metadatamal for datalagre.
Testing av den utviklede metodikken på en reell case-studie for adaptiv gjenbruk av en fem-etasjes kontorbygning i tømmer. 
Etablering av sirkularitetskvantifisering basert på det reelle potensialet og LCA-prosedyre for langlivede tømmerprodukter, inkludert risikokvantifisering over flere ombruk og resirkulering/gjenvinning – tømmerkaskade.
Utvikle dokumentasjon og retningslinjer for resertifisering for gjenvunnet tømmer som grunnlag for europeisk standardisering.
Ombruk av eksisterende bygninger eller deres komponenter har i dag det høyeste potensialet for å redusere karbonutslipp fra byggeindustrien og begrense etterspørselen etter nye råvarer. Ti-ReX har som mål å forbedre byggebransjens bærekraft ved å muliggjøre utstrakt gjenbruk av bærende trekonstruksjoner - enten i den opprinnelige bygningen med samme eller endret konfigurasjon, eller i andre bygninger. Treelementer i bygninger kan ha flere formål; for eksempel bærende, stabilisering, brannspredningsforebygging, varme- og lydisolering og estetikk.

TiREX project answers to the Joint Call Forest Value 2, topic on 'Sustainable timber building systems'. Focus is put on enabling reuse and life extension of the timber structures by developing knowledge and tools for condition assessment of reclaimed timber. The main barrier to circular economy of timber industry addressed in TiReX is the organisation of timber strength grading and quality assessment of solid timber around the material raw production in the saw mill industry. TiREX is divided into 5 core work packages focused on laboratory testing (Spain), data processing (WUT), pilot project of adaptive reuse of timber (Norway), environmental analysis (Finland), and dissemination and communication (Latvia). Testing reclaimed timber from north, south and east Europe with non-destructive and destructive methods is the core TiREX activity and includes mechanical and thermal performance. Methods of data processing for replicability, accuracy, uniformity, future standardization, practicality and reliability of results in real settings will be developed and tested. Real timber building adaptive reuse project in Norway will provide field laboratory for verifying theoretical ideas and frameworks. Holistic environmental assessment methodology for circular wood industry will be theoretically developed and showcased on the pilot building. TiREX contributes to the call objectives of increased carbon sequestration, optimal carbon storage, circular use of wood, integration of cascading, as well as addresses circular and recycling wood principles, organisational structure and policies and regulation. TiReX project is focused on generating knowledge and procedures that offer huge potential for emission and waste reduction and thus require fast popularization and adoption within construction industry to be impactful. TiREX has strong transnational cooperation to prepare data sets that span wide range of parameters representative for Europe via sharing knowledge and laboratories.

ForestValue2 JC2023 - Smart condition assessment of Reclaimed Timber for eXtended service life of long-lived wood products

Varmtvannsberedere har lenge vært en uunnværlig del av våre hjem og nå kan den også bli med i kampen for det grønne skiftet ved å lagre og distribuere energi på en enda smartere måte. Tradisjonelle varmtvannsberedere (VVB) varmer opp vannet og lagrer varmen til du åpner kranen. I det du tapper vannet, etterfylles tanken med kaldt vann som fortløpende varmes opp igjen. Men hva om du kunne utsette oppvarmingen til et gunstigere tidspunkt? F. eks når strømprisen er lav?
I dette prosjektet blir VVB utstyrt med faseendringsmaterialer, som er substanser som kan absorbere og frigjøre store mengder energi under en faseendring, typisk fra fast til flytende form. I praksis betyr dette at når varmtvannsberederen varmer opp vannet, blir en del av denne energien lagret i faseendringsmaterialet ved å endre dets tilstand.
Nyvinningen ligger i muligheten til å lagre større mengder energi over lengre tid og ved en lavere temperatur enn i tradisjonelle beredere. Når man trenger varmt vann, utløses frigjøringen av denne lagrede energien ved å starte en faseendring i materialet. Resultatet? En mer energieffektiv og samtidig pålitelig kilde til varmt vann, drevet av tidligere lagret energi.
Bedre lagringskapasitet og lavere varmetap vil være nøkkelegenskaper for å møte de nye kravene fra EUs Eco-design-direktiv. Belastningen på strømnettet kan reduseres ved å utnytte lagret energi i perioder med høy etterspørsel. Dette bidrar til å jevne ut svingningene i energiforbruket og redusere behovet for ekstra kraftproduksjon. For det andre sparer man kostnader ved å hente energi når strømprisen er lav.
IPN InterLES er et samarbeidsprosjekt mellom produsenten Høiax og Sintef Energi. Støttet av forskningsrådet (6,7 MNOK) og med tilsvarende innsats fra Høiax søker prosjektet å utvikle morgendagens teknologi innenfor smarte varmtvannsberedere.

InterLES aims to increase the energy storage capacity and reduce the energy loss of the next generation hot water tanks (HWT) by integrating latent heat storage. Innovative integrations of phase change materials (PCM) and smart control algorithms reduce electricity costs for consumers, enhance grid stability, and minimize energy losses. The outcome of the project will pave the way for more energy efficient HWTs and outphasing of gas-fired water heaters.  

Through the project we will design and test three integration ideas for PCMs in HWT systems: PCM filled in (1) macroencapsulation and (2) cylindrical containers within the water in the tank, and (3) a cylindrical sleeve with PCM around the HWT as part of the insulation. Multiple PCMs with increasing melting temperatures from bottom to top will be tested in the HWTs to ensure complete melting of each PCM within the stratification temperature profile, which varies across the height of the HWT. Each integration concept will undergo laboratory testing and computational modelling to evaluate its potential for mass production based on eco-techno-economic analysis to identify the most promising concept for further development. 

InterLES aims to develop a 200L combined water/PCM smart storage hot water tank with an increased storage capacity of 3 kWh / 30% and reduced heat loss of 7 W / 10 %. This solution could potentially be adapted to HØIAX's range of products, from small to large scale HTWs. If half of households in Norway adopt this smart storage unit, this would increase the total energy storage capacity with 4 GWh and increase the annual energy saving with 80 GWh. In the European market, this solution has the potential to increase the total energy storage capacity by 0.3 TWh and reduce the yearly energy loss by 6.2 TWh. HØIAX estimate they can more than quadruple their present sales volume if they are ahead in this development.

Next generation smart hot water tanks with integrated latent energy storage

For å nå målet om grønn energiomstilling er det avgjørende å videreutvide applikasjoner for lagring av elektrisk energi. Blant en rekke energilagringsløsninger representerer Li-ion-batteri (LiB) den mest utviklede og pålitelige teknologien, som gir høy energitetthet og langsiktig holdbarhet. LiB batterier har en direkte potensiale til å muliggjøre nullutslippsløsninger som en del av det grønne skiftet. Imidlertid trenger det voksende markedet for elektriske kjøretøy, forbrukerelektronikk og stasjonær energilagring høyere energitetthet enn det som er tilgjengelig i LiB-markedet i dag.
En stor innsats fra akademia og industrien er utført for å forbedre energitettheten til LiBs samtidig som den langsiktige ytelsen som kreves av applikasjonene opprettholdes. Mens energitettheten til katodematerialer nesten har nådd teoretisk grense, er den alternative silisium anodekandidaten til den nåværende brukte grafitten å være den mest mulige og økonomiske tilnærmingen til høy energitetthet. Bruken av Si-baserte anoder blir sett på som det neste trinnet i LIB-teknologiutviklingen mot høyere kapasitet på grunn av mineralets tilgjengelighet, lave pris og en bemerkelsesverdig lagringskapasitet for Li-ionene. Imidlertid resulterer betydelige strukturelle/morfologiske endringer under lade- og utladingssykluser til rask forringing av batterier fremstilt med Si-baserte anoder.
Hovedmålet med SIGNAL 2 er å forbedre levetiden til Si-baserte anoder ved å lage en Si/grafen-kompositt gjennom en skalerbar produksjonsprosess. Prosjektstrategien er å utnytte skalerbare prosesser for Si-vekst gjennom en CVD-prosess og den unike FORZA-produksjonsteknologien for grafen utviklet av CealTech. Vi forventer at vår nye tilnærming og FoU-resultatene oppnådd gjennom dette prosjektet vil demonstrere et anodemateriale som direkte kan introduseres i dagens LIB-produksjon.

The SiGNAL 2 project is a pioneering initiative aimed at developing a novel Si-C composite anode material for Li-ion batteries, synthesized from silicon nanoparticles and 3D graphene using a bottom-up approach. Building on insights from the predecessor project, SiGNAL, the project aims to devise scalable synthesis methods for the Si/Gr composite, with the goal of producing anodes that deliver a capacity of 800 mAh/g over 1000 cycles at 80% Depth of Discharge in a full cell, while maintaining 80% capacity retention. The project aligns with the thematic priorities for energy and low emissions technology and is expected to address high-density energy storage challenges for electric vehicles and other applications. With a commitment to societal impact, gender balance, and knowledge contribution, the project is anticipated to enhance the security of battery material supply in Europe, contribute to scientific discourse, and positively impact the battery industry in Norway. The strategic partnership with Elkem, a major Si producer, will further facilitate the market introduction of the proposed technology. This project will have a positive impact on other Norwegian industrial players producing silicon-based or graphene materials for the battery industry. And it will also facilitate the expansion of the battery department at Cealtech and lead to the recruitment of personnel specializing in material science, electrode design, and engineering.

Silicon-Graphene  Nanoengineered Anode for Li-ion batteries 2

CRESTIMB har som mål å utvikle et innovativt byggesystem i tre, egnet for fleretasjesbygg. Byggesystemet består av momentstive rammer med limtre produsert fra bartre eller lauvtre, innovative bjelke-til-søyle-forbindelser og dybel- laminerte gulvpaneler. Hensikten er å øke sirkularitet og forlenge levetiden til bygninger og konstruksjonskomponenter som bidrar til bærekraftig, ressurseffektiv, kostnadseffektiv og miljøvennlig konstruksjon. For å oppnå dette, vil byggesystemet utformes for å gi lett og enkel montering, demontering og remontering av komponentene.
Bygninger utsettes for langsiktige belastninger og klimavariasjoner (fuktighet og temperatur) i løpet av levetiden. Langsiktige belastninger og klimavariasjoner kan - i betydelig grad- påvirke egenskapene til komponentene i trebygninger. For å oppnå økt levetid er det meget viktig å undersøke den langsiktige oppførselen til komponentene i systemet (limtrebjelker, innovative bjelke-til-søyle-forbindelser og gulvpaneler). Langsiktige belastninger og klimavariasjoner fører til permanente deformasjoner og forbindelsene til byggesystemet bør ha tilstrekkelige toleranser for lett demontering og remontering. Prosjektet vil undersøke den langsiktige oppførselen til komponentene i systemet ved bruk av eksperimentelle og numeriske metoder og også ta hensyn til klimavariasjoner som forventes i bygninger i løpet av levetiden. Basert på disse resultatene vil prosjektet evaluere effekten av permanent belastning og klimavariasjoner og levere forslag for dimensjonering.

CRESTIMB aims to develop an innovative timber system suitable for multi-storey buildings with open spaces. The proposed system will include moment-resisting frames made of softwood or hardwood glue-laminated timber with innovative beam-to-column connections, and dowel cross laminated floor panels. With the objective to ensure an increased service life and the possibility of reuse, the long-term behaviour of the system components will be investigated with an advanced numerical model including the rheology of wood under variable indoor climates. The numerical analyses will be assisted by experiments on softwood and hardwood samples, as well as full size tests. The analysis results, in terms of creep deformations, moisture induced stresses and the related crack risk, will be applied in environmental assessment studies including Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). The proposed approach assumes that the long-term response of timber building systems under variable indoor climates can be optimized by using numerical modelling. Therefore, CRESTIMB will contribute to bridging the gap between advanced wood material models and innovative timber structure design for the development of a new generation of multi-storey residential and office buildings with open spaces.

Den internasjonale sjøfartsorganisasjonen (IMO) har satt et mål om å redusere klimagassutslippene (GHG) fra skipsfarten med 50 % innen 2050 sammenlignet med 2008-nivået. For å oppnå dette, innfører IMO avkarboniseringsregler, inkludert bruk av alternative drivstoff og krav om å regne ut drivstoffets GHG-utslipp på en helhetlig måte. Livsløpsutslipp av drivstoff omfatter utslipp fra råvareutvinning og -behandling, drivstoffproduksjon, transport, distribusjon og drivstoffbruk om bord på skipet. Men det er vanskelig å spore livsløpsutslipp av drivstoff nøyaktig på grunn av de mange drivstoffproduksjonsveiene som fører til svært forskjellige utslippsintensiteter for drivstoff, selv om drivstoffene er kjemisk identiske. I tillegg er drivstofforsyningskjeden for maritim sektor svært kompleks, noe som bidrar til vanskelighetsgraden av oppgaven. I et så komplekst drivstoffproduksjons- og reguleringsmiljø er det avgjørende med åpenhet, sporbarhet og nøyaktighet av utslippsdata. Uten å dokumentere og verifisere drivstoffets GHG-utslipp nøyaktig, er det umulig å måle framgangen i maritim avkarbonisering. Det digitale drivstoffpasset (DFP) har som mål å løse disse utfordringene ved å vise at det er mulig å dokumentere, spore og verifisere GHG-utslipp av marine drivstoff på tvers av drivstofforsyningskjeden. Dette vil bli oppnådd ved å bruke teknologiske byggesteiner: Livsløpsvurderingsmetode, drivstoffmerkingsteknologi og blokkjedeteknologi. Disse teknologiene er tilgjengelige og allerede godt etablerte. Etter vellykket demonstrasjon av prosjektet, kan drivstoffprodusenter, rederier og myndigheter stole på nøyaktigheten av dataene som genereres og deles gjennom DFP-systemet for kommersielle, regulatoriske og rapporteringsbehov. Dette hjelper med å spore utslippsreduksjonsmål for alle parter. Det fremmer også åpenhet, ansvarlighet, samarbeid og handling for bærekraft.

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) only regulates the greenhouse gas emission of fuels from Tank-To-Wake but in the coming few years it is set to include Well-To-Tank emissions as well. We anticipate that documenting and verifying Well-To-Tank emissions of fuels will be more difficult than Tank-To-Wake emissions, primarily due to the multitude of feedstocks, energy sources and fuel production ways used to supply fuels. The Digital Fuel Passport project aims to accurately document and verify emissions incurred in the entire fuel value chain from raw material sourcing to fuel use, incorporating both Well-To-Tank and Tank-To-Wake emissions.
The DFP fosters collaboration among stakeholders within the fuel supply chain. The project will be enabled through multidisciplinary convergence of LCA of fuel emissions, fuel marking and laboratory analysis, and the use of distributed ledger technology. This initiative aims to bridge the existing trust gap among fuel suppliers, fuel users, regulators, and society at large. By doing so, it seeks to establish transparency, accuracy, and a consistent methodology for measuring and reporting emissions throughout the entire fuel value chain.  
To accomplish this objective, the project has formed partnerships with shipping companies, fuel producers, certification bodies, and fuel marking companies, all of whom share a vested interest in achieving the project's objectives. Successful completion of the project will represent a pivotal milestone in the pursuit of the IMO decarbonization target. By documenting emissions incurred throughout the fuel value chain, the DFP project empowers stakeholders with the transparency and trust needed to help the shipping industry to decarbonize. Several R&D challenges will be tackled in the project including how to link fuel emission data efficiently and reliably with fuel marker properties and identification of suitable fuel markers for green marine fuels.

Digital Fuel Passport

GeoPON-prosjektet tar sikte på å utvikle en 100 % sirkulær pongtong, fri for EPS, ved bruk av en skreddersydd geopolymer betong, og å dokumentere virkningene på ytelse og bærekraft. I tillegg, og for å redusere den totale tettheten til pongtongen, vil prosjektet også se på å erstatte de naturlige tilslagene i betongskallet med et sirkulært lett tilslag med lavt eller nøytralt karbonavtrykk, laget av avgang fra gruveindustrien og resirkulerte materialer fra industrien, . Som sådan vil innovasjonen føre til design av et nytt produkt, 100 % sirkulært og med lavere karbonavtrykk enn tradisjonell betong. For å passe til pongtong-spesifikasjonene, må produksjonsprosessen av det geopolymer baserte bindemiddelet og tilslagene optimaliseres og tilpasses.: Det  geopolymer baserte bindemiddelet er et semikrystallinsk amorft materiale, som dannes gjennom polymerisasjonsreaksjonen mellom en aluminosilikat kilde og en alkalisk reagens. Det er et sementfritt bindemiddel, med ultralavt karbonavtrykk, som også tillater CO2-binding. Tilslagene som produseres i prosjektet er satt sammen av et bindemiddel, et tilslagsmateriale samt ulike ytelsesbaserte tilsetningsstoffer, granulert og sintret ved høy temperatur, en prosess som gjør det mulig å skreddersy tilslagsegenskapene til brukerens behov, og for å kunne utnytte den produserte geopolymer baserte betongen som råmateriale ved produksjon av tilsvarende tilslag på slutten av levetiden. For å muliggjøre integrering av den sirkulære geopolymerbetongen som er utviklet i prosjektet til pongtongen, vil det etableres en helhetlig optimaliseringstilnærming i prosjektet, for å definere den beste utformingen av flytende strukturer basert på vurderingene av sirkulære betonger og kravet til de strukturelle ytelsene. Tilnærmingen vil inkludere design, bruk av fluidstrukturinteraksjonsmodellering, produksjon av pongtongen, produksjon av geopolymer og aggregater, og vurdering av miljømessige/økonomiske hensyn.

The main objective of the project is the development of 100% circular pontoon free of EPS using tailored geopolymer concretes and demonstrate the impacts on performance and sustainability. In addition, and for decreasing the overall density of the pontoon, the project will also look at substituting the natural aggregates in concrete shell by high performance recycled particles obtained from industrial wastes. As such, the innovation will lead to the design of a new product, 100% circular, manufactured and commercialised by Helmar. The production process of the foamed geopolymer concrete and the aggregates must also be optimised and tailored to fit for the pontoon specifications, leading to a new production process for Rockpore, and new waste recycle chain for Rana Gruber.
Helmar anticipates that the use of EPS might be prohibited in the future due to new regulations and is looking for alternatives.  The Rockpore solution appears very appealing as a substitute for EPS: The Rockpore concept is a type of low-density geopolymer-concrete, 100% circular, using recycled Light Weight Aggregates and cement free binders. The properties of the TBG can be modified to fit end user needs, which enables market penetration in markets outside the construction sector. The present project aims at utilising and adapting the Rockpore TBG together with a unique cement free, ultra-low carbon footprint binder as a substitute to traditional EPS block in the pontoons. In addition, a new aggregate type will be developed, as a substitute to the natural aggregates used in the shell concrete. To enable the integration of the circular geopolymer concrete developed in the project to the pontoon, a holistic optimization method will be established to define the best design of floating structure based on the assessments of circular concretes and the requirement on the structural performances, and will include design, manufacturing and assessment of environmental/economic considerations.

Tourism businesses must achieve better returns on investment. Without improved profitability, tourism businesses will not be able to re-invest to maintain or improve the quality of their product, or make the sector more attractive for employees in an incr easingly competitive labour market. Growing both expenditure per visitor, and yield for individual businesses through the value they obtain from each visitor, is essential. Growth in visitor numbers is necessary, but secondary to a focus on yield. Moving beyond competition based solely on price and focusing on increasing yield makes tourism businesses more successful so they can deliver long term sustainable products and experiences.

The project intends to take advantage of the ongoing ARENA project "Inn ovative Fjordtourism" and collaborate on datacollection and at the same time contribute with research data that the industry and public sector both regionally and nationally can benefit from. 

More specific the proposed reserach will

1. Define financial  yield measures for tourism businesses in Norway, and measure current performance across various sub-sectors.

2. Define economic and sustainable yield measures for tourism entities in Norway, measure the performance across sub-sectors and in two case-stu dy regions. This will assess economic yield by examining three contributing perspectives - public sector/community, business and the visitor.

3.Develop sustainable yield indicators for Norway.

ALRIGH2T responds in full to the “expected outcomes” and “scope” of the HORIZON-CL5-2023-D5-01-07 topic, by developing and demonstrating two alternative technologies for LH2 aircraft refuelling:  - Direct LH2 refuelling, encompassing the definition of operational protocols for safe and rapid refuelling, the development and testing of a LH2 transfer pump and an instrumented tank, their integration in an iron bird laboratory for the execution of refuelling/defueling tests and the delivering of a digital twin model.  - LH2 tanks swap refuelling, encompassing end-to-end logistic and supply chain of tank modules, the design of the associated on- and off-site infrastructure and its demonstration. Both concepts will achieve TRL 6 by the end of the project, undergoing a comprehensive technology evaluation informed by demonstration results in two major airports, i.e. Milan Malpensa and Paris (Orly or LeBourget) respectively.  The two technology lines are complemented by transversal activities for the definition of technical and techno-economic boundary conditions, the demonstration of the use of H2 for ground operations (i.e. H2 powered tow vehicle, demonstrated at the Malpensa site) as well as environmental, safety and regulatory cross-cutting aspects. ALRIGH2T has the ambition of demonstrating, for the first time, LH2 refuelling in a scale compatible with airport operations, synergizing with the Clean Aviation research and development efforts at the aircraft level.  The project is implemented by a consortium built on the competences of top European industrial players, positioned along entire hydrogen and aeronautic value chain, complemented by research and technology organisations and selected member of the Advisory Board, including the EASA. ALRIGH2T is expected to be a cornerstone in the path towards the deployment of LH2 as an aviation fuel, strengthening the European research and industry leadership and consolidating the role of green airports as hubs of the H2 economy

greEN Energy hUbs for local integRated energy cOmmunities optimizatioN

The main goal of the eNeuron project is to develop innovative tools for the optimal design and operation of local energy communities (LECs) integrating distributed energy resources and multiple energy carriers at different scales. This goal will be achieved, by having in mind all the potential benefits achievable for the different actors involved  and by promoting the Energy Hub concept, as a conceptual model for controlling and managing multi-carrier and integrated energy systems in order to optimize their architecture and operation. In order to ensure both the short-term and the long-term sustainability of this new energy paradigm and thus support an effective implementation and deployment, economic and environmental aspects will be taken into account in the optimization tools through a multi-objective approach. eNeuron’s proposed tools enable tangible sustainability and energy security benefits for all the stakeholders in the LEC. Local prosumers (households, commercial and industrial actors) stand to benefit through the reduction of energy costs while leveraging local, low carbon energy. Developers and solution providers will find new opportunities for technologies as part of an integrated, replicable operational business model. Distribution system operators (DSOs) benefit from avoiding grid congestion and deferring network investments. Policy makers benefit from increasingly sustainable and secure energy supply systems. eNeuron is a high TRL project in line with the Work Programme, by developing innovative approaches and methodologies to optimally plan and operate integrated LECs through the optimal selection and use of multiple energy carriers and by considering both short- and long-run priorities. Through optimally coordinating all energy carriers and vectors, cost-effective and low-carbon solutions will be provided for fostering the deployment and implementation of this new energy paradigm at European level.

Real-tIme on-site forenSic tracE qualificatioN

While time is an important factor for successful outcome of the crime investigation, the traditional forensic examinations are usually time consuming. It can be very problematic when investigations are underway and quick results are needed. Traces must be detected on-site as soon as possible before they degrade and loose forensic information important for criminal investigation. Based on the results of the FORLAB project, the aim of the RISEN project is the development of a set of real-time contactless sensors for the optimization of the trace, detection, visualisation, identification and interpretation on site, with a consequent reduction of the time and resources in the laboratory, and for a fast exchange of information among LEAs.  The new proposed approach could be applied to the classical forensic investigations and to disaster sites, e.g. after a terrorist attack. The objectives of the RISEN project will be obtained by: -Developing and demonstrating contactless, non-destructive, automated sensors to identify, select and label trace materials; -Processing and sending in real-time acquired in-situ data to a 3D Augmented Crime Scene Investigation system to produce an interactive 3D model of the scene with position and labelling of traces and relative results of the on-site analysis. The recreated 3D model of the scene resorts to augmented reality techniques for sensor data, collected evidence and identified points of interest in order to deliver a realistic and immersive visual environment for investigators, allowing them to conduct highly detailed investigations. The crime scenes, with analytical information from traces, will be digitally frozen to be available at any time for several purposes in the criminal justice system. The identified traces will be digitally marked and inventoried, and a digitalised Chain of Custody will be established in real-time implementing mechanisms that assure data integrity over its lifecycle.
