Dynamics and manipulation of coherent matter, atoms and molecules in electromagnetic fields

The project will focus on studies of dynamical features of various types of quantum systems interacting with electromagnetic fields. In particular efforts will be on time dependent studies of excited Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC) as well as the dynamics of atoms and molecules interacting with future ultra short intense laser pulses. In spite of different length-, energy- and time-scales, the common ingredient of the project will be use of, and further development of, numerical parallel algorithms. The main task will be to develop techniques to perform three dimensional time dependent calculations of BEC dynamics. The time dependent code will be used to study various aspects of coherent BEC features, like superfluid flow, condensates in optical latt ices and dynamics of the coherent field of atom lasers. In addition the collaboration on controlled dynamics of Rydberg atoms in electromagnetic field will continue, in particular with respect to explore recent ideas on the possibility to measure Berry's phase of a Rydberg atom in a periodic electromagnetic fi eld. The candidate plans to spend one year in foreign leading groups.
