Holding and transport of live marine organisms - Del 1 Krabbe

Tildelt: kr 1,6 mill.

Møreforsking Ålesund has previously contributed in several projects on live holding and transport, mainly on crab, but also blue mussels. It is now proposed a three year research project to improve and document holding and transport of Brown crab (Cancer pagurus). The project will be carried out with contributions from several fishers and processors. Methodology will be established through the cooperation with the University of Hull. There is need for better knowledge of the effects of environmental parameters surrounding aquatic animals in transport (on smaller fishing vessels, in truck tanks). The improvement in viability of the animals between fishing/harvesting and transport (pre- treatments) is important to ensure good transport results. In the proposed project, different pre-treatments will be examined, and measured as effects during and after transport as physiological status. The experiments include follow-up after a period of post-transport recovery. Experiments will be carried out in small-scale in the laboratory, and the results will be evaluated against measurements from commercial transports in cooperation with the contributing companies.
