CO2 sequestration in aquifers - Experimental studies on mineral trapping

Sequestration of CO<sub>2</sub> in subsurface geologic formations involves a large number of processes, and there is a need for multidisciplinary studies to understand and document the interaction of processes. However, mineral trapping will be the final storage of CO<sub>2</sub> given sufficient time. Due to the high carbonic acid concentration, the silicate minerals will dissolve incongruently, giving rise to precipitation of secondary minerals: carbonates of Ca, Mg, Fe and clay minerals. There are, how ever, few documentations of mineral trapping due to CO<sub>2</sub> injection in aquifers. The project will conduct experimental studies of CO<sub>2</sub> mineral trapping, to close present gaps in knowledge and understanding of the CO<sub>2</sub> subsurfa ce sequestration process.
