We propose to conduct a new tomographic study of the crust and upper mantle under Norway and adjacent areas by means of state-of-the-art methods and new seismological data, in particular broadband data, which are now available for this region. We will mai nly concentrate on obtaining a better S-wave velocity model by using surface waves and waveform modelling of broadband recordings of S-waves. This project will complement on-going similar studies in the Arctic region, in Northern Germany-Southern Sweden a nd in Finland. We will use data recorded at permanent stations as well as at mobile stations, in particular mobile stations deployed during the CENMOVE project which was conducted in Southern Norway from 2001 to 2004. Our project will result in a much bet ter constrained 3D velocity model for the region of interest. In addition to providing a better basis for accurate earthquake location in Scandinavia, an accurate tomographic model of the upper mantle is a key element in understanding the geodymanics of t he region. We anticipate that our model will bring important elements for understanding the origin of the still unexplained important uplift that Atlantic margins, including Southern and mid-Norway, underwent in Cenozoic time, and which may be related to the interaction of the Icelandic plume with the continental lithosphere bordering the Atlantic Ocean.
