Sequence stratigraphy and mineralogical, geochemical, and reservoir-quality evolution of deep-marine clastic deposits

The project is part of an established EFS project within the EUROMARGIN program with EFS project number 01-LEC-EMS 10F, with professor Sadoon Morad, University of Uppsala as the Principle Investigator. Documentation of participiants and full description of the project and subprojects is geven in appendices 1- 4. The subproject leaded by Johan Petter Nystuen at the University of Oslo concerns about diagenesis and provenance related to sequence development in the Vøring and Møre basins, Mid-Norwegian she lf, supplementary studies in the . Turbidite sandstones of Cretaceous to Tertiary age have in these basins been deposited together with mud and clay. During repeated events of sea level rise and fall, meteoric water flow has changed as regards to volumes of percolated sandstones in the basin. Pilot studies have revealed that turbidite sandstone beds have been influenced by water undersaturated in respect of potassium, thus giving rise to subsurface formation of autochthonous kaolinite in the expence og fe ldspar. The effect of this secondary kaolinite is to reduceeffective porosity and permeability. We think that events of such and likely related diagenetic alterations can be linked with the sequence stratigraphic history of the successions, and by this re ason having the potential of being predictable. Another aspect with the successionsin these two basin are the problem of provenance. Geochemical data on provenance will be obtained from selected isotopes from sandstones and shales. Provenance is of signi ficance for reconstruction of routes of sediment paths and therby also for the meterorc water flow system.
