e-WOK - energy Web Ontologies Knowledge

Tildelt: kr 0,12 mill.

This proposal for an Integrated Project on Energy Web/Ontology/Knowledge (e-WOK) aims at defining, sharing, prototyping and using knowledge models for semantic memories and intelligence of CO2 mitigation. A number of work packages will be integrated on to p of common ontologies and interoperability services. Our S&T main objective is to build semantically empowered communities of practice in environmental and process industries, thanks to semantic web technologies i.e. ontologies and the corresponding web services. We propose this initiative as an Integrated Project because our goals are very ambitious, forward-looking, and because we have together the sufficient critical mass to develop and implement such a level of semantic interoperability. e-WOK is not "just another project"; we want to change the way our industry conducts its developments by powering networks of collaborating organisations with new information and knowledge sharing mechanisms. Knowledge sharing in our domain essentially consists of do cument sharing systems with keyword/full text search plus email and discussion fora for communities of practice. This does not yet allow workers and citizens to access critical information at the right time and at the right level. However, thanks to the e mergent semantic web technologies, we can work to bridge the gap between the ever-increasing need to access information in the best way, and what our systems are able to provide. Due to the richness of the application domain and of the technologies, the p roposed Integrated Project will have a highly multidisciplinary content and will involve teams and groups of people with complementary skills. It will certainly give a significant advantage to the European organisations involved, which form a critical mas s with no equivalent in one single country.
