Canada - Intensive rearing conditions: effects on health and welfare

Tildelt: kr 0,10 mill.

Development of the aquaculture industry requires a compromise between intensive production and a growing need for healthy, high-quality seafood. Both in Norway and Canada, there has been increasing focus on fish welfare. However, there are few established methods to define or measure fish welfare. Thus, there is a need to develop methods to assess and secure the status of fish. The interactions between unfavourable rearing conditions and susceptibility to diseases have been topics of research projects bo th at Fiskeriforskning and at AquaNet in Canada. The two partners have a common goal "to foster a sustainable aquaculture sector" in our respective countries. The objective of this project is to obtain comprehensive research projects involving an active bilateral collaboration and funding plan. The aim of these studies will be to achieve novel knowledge about the effect of intensive rearing conditions on health and welfare status of farmed fish.
