Tildelt: kr 0,15 mill.

Based on preliminary results from previous research at the U.S. Military Academy/ Norwegian Naval Academy and University of Bergen we propose to develop a new research collaboration between researchers at the University of beregn Norway and significant U. S. institutions involved in research and development in military personell and civilian populations. In this research project we plan to furter investigate investigating the role of character strengths in leadership and decision-making, and to follow up o n a number of extremely productive streams of research that should be continued and expanded in order to develop more knowledge about psychological factors that influence leadership and productivity in operational military and civilian units. These coul d include cross-cultural comparisons of the role of character strengths in leader development and in adaptation to the demanding leader development programs as exemplified by military academies across the world. A second stream of research should focus on identifying and assessing the role of character strengths in adaptation to demanding operational missions. The Positive Psychology model suggests a number of independent variables that should predict successful adaptation under these conditions and sugge st interventions to empower operational personell to better cope with future hardships. A continued collaborative effort between U.S. researchers and the research group in "Operational Psychology" at the University of Bergen, Norway could contribute to v ital multicultural perspectives on these topics -
