NA - DEVELOPING JOINT USA - CANADA - NORWAY COLLABORATION ON ECOTOXICOLOGICAL RISKS FOR FISH EXPOSED TO MULTIPLE STRESSORS

Tildelt: kr 0,15 mill.

Assessment of ecotoxicological risks associated with biological responses in fish exposed to multiple stressors (contaminants, radiation or other stressors) is a key international research issue. The understanding of the underlying mechanisms for lethal/s ub-lethal effects in fish induced by a mixture of stressors is essential for environmental management/regulators of natural fish populations as well as for the aquaculture industry, securing welfare and growth of cultivated fish. The present proposal aims to establish a 5-10 year joint trilateral project between USA, Norway and Canada to identify biological responses in natural fish populations as well as in cultivated fish from chronic multiple stressor exposure, utilising modern molecular and genetic to ols as early warning biomarkers. The collaboration should provide essential information on dose-response relationships (on/off mechanisms), sensitivity (detection limits, thresholds), synergetic and antagonistic effects, and the role of protecting agents such as antioxidants. The project will focus on some key scientific questions within ecotoxicology/ecology and within environmental impact and risk assessments: ·By what mode of action do stressors interact with fish species? ·What biological and chemic al mechanisms are responsible for additive, synergetic, antagonistic or protective effects shown by fish on exposure to combined agents? ·Why are some fish species and life-stages more sensitive to stressors than others? ·How can biomarkers be used to i mprove ecological risk assessment? The project will focus on technology development and transfer, joint experimental work at existing facilities or in the field, and development of Master and PhD exchange programmes. Furthermore, Guest professor/ professo r II positions will be utilised to link high competence to higher education. The project will involve three internationally well-merited research groups, and will take advantage of their established network.
