VANN: Quotas as a management approach for sustainable harvesting of Atlantic salmon populations in rivers and bag-net fisheries in Norway.

Tildelt: kr 1,7 mill.

Management of Atlantic salmon is moving towards using management targets (numbers of females left to spawn) as a tool for obtaining sustainable harvest and viable populations. To obtain the desired number of spawners, fishing pressure has to be determined before the start of the season. To use this management approach, necessary management measures to acquire this goal have to be developed and evaluated. In this project we will evaluate the biological effects of different management approaches (quotas, ba g-limits, time- and gear regulations). This will be done by simulating the behaviour of salmon and fishermen (anglers and commercial fishermen) from existing knowledge, supplemented with data from online catch reports (?laksebørser?). Furthermore, we will assess the acceptance of different management measures among anglers, commercial fishermen and river owners. Finally, we will combine the results from the biological and societal part of the project to give management advices that take both aspects into account.
