Svalbard ice cores and climate variability

Tildelt: kr 2,3 mill.

In this project we are going to use three already available ice cores from Svalbard to investigate the present and the past 800 years of climate. Two of these cores, from Lomonosovfonna and Austfonna, are fully analysed and the data sets are available. In this proposal we ask for funding to finish the high-resolution water isotope analyses and to interpret the data from the last drilled of these cores, from Holtedahlfonna. The data from the ice cores will be thoroughly investigated and integrated with var ious other data sets for different aspect of climate during the past 800 years. The main funding is sought for a Post Doctoral scientist for 2-years.The project is considered as a low-risk project since there are much good data already available and the sc ientific network is extensive and well coordinated.
