Application for Purchase of Advanced Geomechanical Testing Equipment

Tildelt: kr 3,0 mill.

The main objective of the application is to acquire new experimental equipment at NGI dedicated to geomechanical testing at high pressure and temperature with geophysical monitoring and non-destructive real time visualization of the rock internal porous s tructure. The main components are: - Infinite stiff rock deformation system. - Direct shear box. - Industrial CT-scanner. - Laboratory ultrasonic system. Applications of the equipment will include: - Characterisation of the behaviour of geomaterials (in tact and fractured rocks) at elevated temperatures and pressures, with emphasis on shear strength capacity and strain softening behaviour, using an infinite stiff loading frame and high pressure pumps. - Intact and fractured rocks strength and coupled def ormation and flow testing with a new direct shear apparatus. - Visualisation of fracture evolution and fluid flow with non-destructive method based on X-ray Computed Tomography (CT). - Measurement of acoustic velocities and monitoring of fracture mechanis ms in rocks with dedicated laboratory ultrasonic system. The proposed investments are in line with NGIs strategy plan for Petroleum geomechanics 2006-2008 (NGI, 2006). The new experimental facilities will enable NGI to develop new expertise and initiate new research and development activities within reservoir characterisation, geomechanics and environment. The equipment will contribute to establishing network of expertise among national and international research institutions.
