Use of furfurylated wood for the production of high- performance windows made of European timber

The present research proposal is a collaboration of three international research institutes with substantial experiences in wood modification and research-intensive SMEs intending to adapt the process of furfurylation to potential frame timbers. Furfuryla tion is an innovative technology in wood processing aiming to enhance the properties of European timbers and promote alternatives to the use of tropical timbers and conventional chemical wood preservation. The project therefore shows a high industrial rel evance by improving competitivness of Eurpean wood species towards non-sustainable materials, e.g. PVC and aluminium, in the window market.
