HavKyst delprogram II This project is a follow-up of an NFR-financed Strategic Institute Program at NGI that will terminate at the end of 2007 (2004-2007). In the context of this project, activated carbon amendment has been applied (May 2007) as a novel remediation technique in a pilot project in Trondheim Harbor, cofinanced by NFR and Trondheim Harbor Authorities. AC (2000 kg) has been amended at a 2000 sq-meter pilot field in Inner Trondheim Harbour. The presently proposed project aims at the long-term follow-up and monitoring of the field pilot in Trondheim Harbor. The technique of Activated Carbon Amendment has many advantages: · Better long-term effects than conventional capping, as newly deposited sediment is mixed with the existing sediment and r emediated by the activated carbon. ·No need for dredging and deposition, thus avoiding all controversies around this technique. ·No reduced sailing depth ·No need for traditional capping masses, therefore reduced need for transport. The following monitor ing is envisioned. In all cases native compounds (i.e., as present in the field) will be studied. Parameters to be tested include physical, chemical and biological ones. Physical: spatial distribution of the AC in the upper 10 cm of the sediment, spread ing of the material to adjacent areas. Chemical: i) freely dissolved aqueous concentrations (passive samplers), ii) flux from sediment to overlying water using benthic diffusion chambers. Biological: i) bioaccumulation in both native and added sediment-dw elling organisms, ii) biodiversity effects of activated carbon amendment.
