We apply for NOK 200 000 through the GLOBVAC programme to establish a research project to look into equity, efficiency and cost-effectiveness implications of alternative policies to improve immunization in low income countries from a health systems perspe ctive. The main consortium members are University of Bergen (UIB) and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM), with Christian Michelsens Institute (CMI) and MEASURE Evaluation - SAVVY Tanzania as collaborating partners. We are current ly in the process of identifying a collaborating partner for India through the networks of LSHTM. This proposed project will contribute to the development of a research proposal that will target all the four overall aims of the GLOBVAC programme. The pr oposal will be designed to i) develop knowledge on poverty related diseases and health problems. This is done by looking into aspects that influence coverage of the Expanded Programme of Immunization (EPI) in low income settings, and by providing knowled ge about how future immunization efforts can contribute to improved population health. ii) The proposal will strengthen significantly the health economic research community in Bergen that has specialized in low income settings through sustaining a senior researcher towards professor competence and through training of a Norwegian PhD candidate. iii) The proposal will strengthen international collaboration through a close cooperation with London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM). Other Euro pean partners will also be considered for potential expansion of the programme through the 7th framework programme of the EU. Finally, a project establishment support will be used to iv) develop and strengthen partnerships between Bergen and London with the partners in the south. The proposal will include plans to recruit and train one PhD and one MSc at both UIB and LSHTM.
