Discourses on Public Service Broadcasting in Norway and Sweden

Tildelt: kr 77 000

Discourses on public service broadcasting in Norway and Sweden In my PhD-thesis I am conducting a comparative analysis of discourses on public service broadcasting (PSB) in Norway and Sweden between 2000 and 2007. The analysis is focused around three dif ferent contexts: The public debate about PSB and the national PSB institutions, where the data consists of newspaper articles. The second context is the national broadcaster's reflexivity as PSB institutions. The focus is here upon how the institutions in terpret and legitimize their mission in today's media environment, characterized by convergence, digitalization, globalization, commercialization and increased interactivity. The data for this part of the analysis consist of the institutions annual report s, strategy documents and interviews with people holding important positions within the institutions. The third context is the political aspect of PSB. Here the focus is on the political documents related to PSB produced during the 21st century. In additi on to this, documents discussing cultural policy in general will also be looked into, thus applying a cultural policy perspective. Discourses on PSB will then be analysed from an institutional, public debate and political perspective. The public sphere, d emocracy and culture are important theoretical dimensions in the project. Methodologically the main approach is discourse analysis, in combination with repertoire theory.
