Norwegian and Romanian Immigration to the United States of America

Tildelt: kr 46 000

My project represents a comparative study on Norwegian and Romanian immigration to USA and it covers the period between the beginning of the 18th century until the end of the Second World War. The aim of the research is to offer a fresh perspective on the Norwegian immigration, but it also attempts so provide useful information on the Romanian immigration to USA, which has not been deeply researched until now. The project will first focus on the causes that determined both Norwegians and Romanians to immi grate to USA, mainly on the economic, social and political context that generated such a massive immigration, especially from Norway. The second part of the project will refer to the historical events, will describe how the two immigrations took place, wi th reference to statistics and key data. An important aspect of this part is the gradual flow of immigrants. The America Letters represent a key aspect of the project. Until now research has been done on the letters sent home by Norwegians and how they in fluenced the evolution of the immigration, but I would like to relate them to the letters Romanians sent home, rarely mentioned until now. Furthermore, I would like to focus on the communities of Norwegians and Romanians in USA, to refer to the places the y settled in, to how they adapted to a new life. And last, but not least, the project will analyze the effects of the two immigrations on the Norway and Romania, to find similarities and differences between them. All in all, the project aims at offering a new perspective on the two immigrations and to show that one can find similarities between immigrations from two very different countries.
