Comparison of the synaesthetic metaphor structure in English, Polish, and Dutch

The project consists in collecting instances of synaesthetic metaphors occurring in non-poetic written texts in English, Polish, and Dutch. The metaphors would be then analysed with respect to their structure, i.e. the preference for respective senses as source or target domains, and correlation between the domains. If a hierarchical pattern of sense organisation can be found, this would suggest that the structure of synaesthetic metaphors is not culture- or language-dependent. Library research - the fir st part of the project - to be carried out in Norway would provide the theoretical basis of and a set of methodological tools necessary for carrying out the study and analysing its results.
